Sultanhanı Caravanserai

The best seasons to visit the caravanserai are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October). The weather is cool, allowing you to comfortably explore the large stone courtyard. In summer, the courtyard gets very hot at midday; it is more reasonable to go at opening (07:30) or in the late afternoon. Visiting in winter is possible, but keep in mind that there may be a risk of fog and frost on the surrounding road.

Simply depart from Kayseri city center and follow the D260 highway towards Sivas. You will see the sign for the caravanserai at the 47th kilometer. Coming by car is the most practical way; parking is available. Those preferring public transport can take buses from Kayseri to Sivas and get off at the Sultanhanı stop, but since there is a walking distance between the stop and the caravanserai, renting a car or taking a taxi would be more comfortable.

Sultanhanı Caravanserai is a stop that can be explored in half a day. A period of 45 minutes to 1.5 hours is sufficient to visit the courtyard, the pavilion mosque, the interior, watch the carpet weaving demonstration, and take photos. If you are traveling on the Kayseri-Sivas route, it is an ideal stopover; there is also a small cafe inside.

You can start from Kayseri, visit Sultanhanı Caravanserai first, and then continue towards Sivas to add other Seljuk structures in the vicinity, such as Karatay Caravanserai, to your route. Starting your day in Kayseri city center with Hunat Hatun Complex and Kayseri Castle and ending it at Sultanhanı is also a good option. A short break in Bünyan town center is possible on the way back.

The most striking photographic angle of the caravanserai is the axis extending from the courtyard entrance to the pavilion mosque. The stone columns and arches create a strong perspective along this axis. In the interior, in the section where the carpet exhibition is located, it is possible to capture interesting shots in terms of texture and color. Near sunset, the stone craftsmanship of the exterior facade is covered with a golden light; photos taken at these times are particularly impressive.

Since the caravanserai is a historical structure, be careful not to touch the carpets and kilims displayed inside. Visitor comments include complaints about firecrackers being set off inside the structure; respecting the historical fabric preserves the experience for both you and future visitors. We recommend not going with the expectation of a large social facility or restaurant; there is only a small cafe inside. Confirm visiting hours with an official source before you go.

Sultanhanı Caravanserai was built by Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I during one of the most powerful periods of the Anatolian Seljuk State. This structure, which served as safe accommodation, food and drink, and animal shelter for caravans on the Silk Road, is a concrete reflection of the Seljuks' policy of protecting and developing trade routes. The pavilion mosque, placed right in the middle of the courtyard, is one of the typical features of Seljuk caravanserai architecture; it adds both functional and aesthetic depth to the structure. The structure also gave its name to the Sultanhanı town.
