Tuzhisar Sultan Han

Tuzhisar Sultan Han was built between 1233-1237 during the reign of Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I. Located at a strategic point on the trade and caravan route between Kayseri and Sivas, the han stands apart from many other Anatolian hans due to its construction by the state. Although its construction inscription has not survived, information about the period and its patron is conveyed through architectural features and historical records. It was protected and restored during the Republican era.

Late spring and summer months are the most suitable period for a visit. During this time, the han remains open for longer, and road conditions are better. Early autumn is also a good option; however, the structure may be kept closed in winter. If you plan a winter visit, you need to confirm with the village headman in advance that you can enter. Visitor density is generally low, which is an advantage for those seeking a quiet trip.

From Kayseri city center, you need to follow the D260 highway (Sivas direction) for approximately 46-47 km. After turning off at the Tuzhisar/Sultanhanı Village exit, you will reach the han after another 1 km. Public transportation options are quite limited, so coming by private car or rental car is the most practical way. Although there are minibus services from Kayseri center to Bünyan, an additional transportation solution is needed to reach the han from there.

The strongest photo spot of the han is its ornate crown gate at the entrance. Adorned with Seljuk geometric and floral motifs, this gate receives good light in the morning and at noon. After entering the courtyard, the columns and upper floor of the pavilion mosque also offer a strong composition. The long arched corridors in the enclosed accommodation section are an ideal area for perspective photography. The general view taken from outside the structure is a valuable shot for conveying its dimensions.

Keep in mind that the han may be closed in winter and the key is held by the village headman. Contacting the headman before your visit eliminates the risk of a wasted trip. Since the structure is 1 km inland from the main road, visiting without a vehicle may be difficult. The ground may be uneven in some areas; prefer comfortable walking shoes. It is stated that it is sometimes used as a restaurant in the summer months; access is easier during this period.

Tuzhisar Sultan Han deserves a 1-2 hour visit for a detailed examination. The structure is more of a roadside stop on the Kayseri-Sivas route rather than filling a full-day program on its own. You can combine it with other Seljuk works in Kayseri city center, such as Hunat Hatun Complex and Döner Kümbet, to create a comprehensive Seljuk architecture tour.

If you are departing from Kayseri, you can stop at Tuzhisar Sultan Han in the morning and then continue to Sivas or the Cappadocia region. After seeing the Hunat Hatun Complex and Kayseri Castle in Kayseri city center, visiting Sultan Han outside the city will allow you to experience the Seljuk period comprehensively. You can also include Bünyan district in your return route.

The han reflects the classic Seljuk caravanserai plan, consisting of an open courtyard and an enclosed section. The multi-story pavilion mosque in the courtyard stands out particularly with its structure on columns and stone masonry. Figural decorations appear at various points such as gargoyles, buttresses, the entrance iwan, the crown gate, and the frieze under the eaves. The second door providing access to the enclosed accommodation section is also ornate like the first; the meticulous work of the stone craftsmen can be seen throughout the structure.
