Imam Kulu Rock Relief

The most suitable periods for visiting the Imam Kulu Rock Relief are the spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) months. Since Tomarza and its surroundings have a Central Anatolian climate, temperatures can rise significantly in summer; moreover, there isn't a single tree to provide shade in the open area where the relief is located. Road conditions can become difficult in winter. The air is cooler in the morning, and the light angle is also much more favorable for photography.

The most practical way to reach the relief is by private vehicle. After heading from Kayseri city center towards Develi or Tomarza, you just need to follow the Imamkullu Village Road. The distance from Develi town center is approximately 40 kilometers. You can create a route by typing 'Imam Kulu Rock Relief' or 'Imamkullu Village, Tomarza' into navigation apps. Since public transport connections are extremely limited, renting a car from the city or going with agencies that organize tours would be a much more reliable choice.

30 to 60 minutes will be sufficient to examine and photograph the relief on site. However, since you will be traveling a long way to get here, combining the visit with other historical and natural sites in Tomarza or Develi district will create a much more efficient travel plan. It can easily be included in a day trip from Kayseri city center.

Starting from Kayseri, you can first visit the district of Develi, then follow the Imamkullu Village road to reach the relief. On the return route, it is possible to stop in Tomarza town center and taste local delicacies. If you are also including the Cappadocia region in your travel plan, the Imam Kulu Rock Relief is naturally positioned as an intermediate stop on this route.

Since the relief stands in an open field without any structures or tree shadows, harsh shadows can form at midday, and the details of the figures may be lost. Early morning or late afternoon hours offer soft light that accentuates the carved details on the relief. With a wide-angle lens, you can capture both the relief and the surrounding Central Anatolian steppe. For capturing the details of the figures, a macro or medium telephoto lens can be preferred.

The area where the relief is located is an open field, so there is no shade; sunscreen and sufficient water should definitely be with you. Since the ground can be uneven and stony, choose sturdy-soled shoes. To avoid damaging the historical artifact, refrain from touching the relief or writing anything on it. In winter, check the weather conditions before setting off, considering that the village road may be closed due to snow or ice.

Dining options around Imamkullu Village are quite limited. It is recommended to procure food and drinks from the district centers of Develi or Tomarza before your visit. Pastırma, sucuk, and mantı, symbols of Kayseri cuisine, can be found in restaurants in these districts. If you are planning a long outdoor visit, do not forget to bring snacks and plenty of water.
