Limenia Adası, Isparta'nın Yalvaç ilçesine bağlı Hoyran Gölü ortasında yer alan, antik dönemde Artemis Tapınağı, Bizans surları ve kaya mezarları barındıran arkeolojik bir adacıktır.
Limenia Island is located in the middle of Hoyran Lake, in the Gaziri area of Yalva district, Isparta. It is 3 kilometers from the shore, measuring 250x400 meters, with a terrain that gently rises in the middle. There is no land connection; the island can only be reached by fishing boat.
The historical layers of the island are intertwined. Remains of a temple dedicated to the Goddess Artemis stand on it. During the Byzantine period, walls encircling the island were built around these ruins. Rock tombs carved into the rocky slopes are another layer, notable for their architectural craftsmanship. The island also contains the remains of a monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
It can be thought of as a small archaeological site floating in the lake. Limenia, part of the same region as Ancient Pisidian Antioch in Yalva, is a calm and little-known stop today, preserving the natural texture of the lake.
Guide's Note
When to Visit
Spring and summer months, when the lake is calm, are a more comfortable option for a boat trip. On windy and wavy days, fishermen may prefer not to go out, so it's useful to check the weather before going.
How to Get to the Island
From Yalva center, the Gaziri area is easily reached by asphalt road. Once you reach the lakeside, things change: there is no regular service to the island, you need to arrange with local fishermen to cross by boat. The distance from the shore to the island is approximately 3 kilometers, it takes a short time by boat, but informing them in advance will make things easier.
How Much Time to Allocate
The tour on the island itself is short, about 45 minutes is sufficient. However, when factoring in waiting for the boat, travel time, and time spent by the lake, allocating half a day is a more realistic plan.
What's Around
Limenia Island can be considered along the same route as Ancient Pisidian Antioch in Yalva. Nearby attractions include Yalva Taşevi Beach, Avşar Bath, and Akkeili Bicycle Track. It makes sense to add this island to a day trip to Yalva.
Good Spots for Photos
The rock tombs on the rocky slopes of the island are striking both historically and visually. It is also possible to capture the silhouette of the island rising in the middle of the lake before boarding the boat from the shore.
Things to Pay Attention To
The island is a completely natural and unprotected archaeological site; walking paths are not regulated, and there are rocky and sloping terrains. Since boat access depends on weather conditions, it is necessary to keep the day of visit flexible. It is useful to carry enough water and sun protection, as there are no facilities on the island.
About the Island's History
Limenia is a part of the ancient Pisidian region intertwined with the lake. The remains of the Temple of Artemis form the oldest layer of the island, while the walls added during the Byzantine period and a later monastery show that the island was used in different periods throughout centuries. Today, it is largely quiet and has few visitors, which makes it a different experience from crowded ancient cities.
