Yalvaç Müzesi, Isparta'nın Yalvaç ilçesinde Pisidia Antiocheia kazılarından çıkan mermer heykeller ve Roma dönemi eserlerini sergileyen arkeoloji müzesidir; giriş ücretsizdir.

Yalvaç Museum is located on Gazipaşa Street in the district center. Its story goes back to the early 1900s when American archaeologists excavating at Pisidia Antiocheia temporarily moved the discovered artifacts to a high school building in Yalvaç. The excavations ended in 1947, but as artifacts continued to arrive from villages, a storage facility was built, and then in 1963, construction of the current museum building began. Opened in 1966, the museum was completely renovated between 1998-2000 and gained a contemporary exhibition layout.

There are four indoor halls: Prehistory, Classical Artifacts, Ethnography, and St. Paul halls. The Prehistory hall displays rhinoceros, mammoth, and horse fossils, vases and depas from the Early Bronze Age, and terracotta idols reflecting the Mother Goddess cult. The most striking part is the Classical Artifacts Hall: original marble works from the Antiocheia sculpture school, head and torso fragments of colossal statues, Tyche and Nike statues, and imperial-era portraits are here. The most talked-about piece in the hall is the colossal seated statue of Zeus, dated to the 1st century AD. It is exhibited alongside statues of Athena, Nike, and Mousa. The Res Gestae Divi Augusti inscription is also in this hall; a copy of Augustus's political testament written in his own hand.

There is also an open-air exhibition in the garden, where part of the visit takes place. It is logical to visit before or after exploring the Ancient City of Antiocheia, as most of the excavated pieces are housed here, not in the ancient city itself.

Best Time to Visit

Since the museum is an indoor venue, it can be visited all four seasons. However, as the main purpose of going to Yalvaç is usually to see the Ancient City of Antiocheia as well, spring and summer months are preferred. Between April and September, the weather is more suitable for an open-air tour of the ancient city. The museum is closed on Mondays, so the travel plan should be adjusted accordingly.

How to Get to Yalvaç Museum

From Isparta city center to Yalvaç is approximately 100 kilometers, taking about an hour by road. After reaching the district, the museum is on Gazipaşa Street, close to the center. It is possible to come to Yalvaç by your own vehicle or intercity buses and reach the center on foot.

How Much Time to Allocate

Since the museum itself consists of four halls, 1-1.5 hours is sufficient. However, for those who want to see the Ancient City of Antiocheia while in Yalvaç, the entire trip takes a full day. As some artifacts from the ancient city are exhibited in the museum, planning both consecutively on the same day enhances the integrity of the visit.

Suggested Route

It is a logical sequence to visit Yalvaç Museum first in the morning to see the Zeus statue and classical period artifacts, then proceed to the Ancient City of Antiocheia in the afternoon. This way, you can see where the artifacts you saw in the museum were unearthed in the ancient city. If you have time, a short break at the 800-year-old plane tree in Yalvaç center can also be considered.

Good Spots for Photography

The colossal Zeus statue in the Classical Artifacts Hall is the most photographed piece in the museum. The head and torso fragments of marble sculptures, and stone artifacts in the garden exhibition also provide good shots in terms of texture and detail. Since the indoor lighting is generally constant, shooting without flash yields cleaner results.

Things to Pay Attention To

The museum is closed on Mondays, so adjust your travel plans accordingly. Since the ticket office closes at 17:00, it is necessary to arrive early for the last entry. Confirm current hours and admission conditions from the museum's official source before you go.

Things to Know About the Museum

Yalvaç Museum is considered one of the oldest and largest museums in the Lakes Region. In addition to its four halls (Prehistory, Classical Artifacts, Ethnography, St. Paul), there are also artifacts in the garden exhibition. Most of the artifacts come from the excavations of Pisidia Antiocheia and the Sanctuary of Men; some were acquired by the museum through donations or purchases from the local community.
