Feyzullah Paşa Camii, Isparta'nın Atabey ilçesinde, 1645-1648 yılları arasında inşa edilmiş ve 1924'te yeniden yapılan tarihi camiidir. Ahşap sütunları ve tuğla minaresiyle Selçuklu-Osmanlı geçiş döneminin mimarisini yansıtır.
The Feyzullah Pasha Mosque stands directly opposite the Ertokuş Madrasah in the Müftü Neighborhood of Atabey district. There is only a 5-6 meter road between them, making it very easy to visit both in the same trip. Although Böcüzade Süleyman Sami's manuscript Isparta History states that the mosque was built in 1495, this date is not considered possible by researchers. This is because no pasha with that name (Fazıl, Feyzullah, Fazlullah) is found during that period. The accepted date is between 1645-1648.
The mosque's roof was formerly covered with an earthen roof. When it fell into disrepair over time, it was demolished in 1924 and rebuilt in its current form. But not everything was discarded during the demolition: the old wooden columns and wooden carvings were used exactly as they were in the new structure. The brick minaret was also left untouched as it remained intact. There is an inscription dated 1861 on the northern shoe part of the minaret; it states that a person named Mehmed Uşşaki repaired the minaret that year.
When visited together with the nearby Ertokuş Madrasah, a small but intense historical tour of Atabey's Seljuk-Ottoman transition period emerges.
Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
Considering Atabey's climate, which is hot in summers and cold in winters, spring and autumn are the most comfortable months. Since the mosque is still open for worship, a short wait may be necessary during prayer times; between noon and afternoon prayer is usually quiet. If you want to clearly see the inscription on the north facade of the minaret, prefer daytime hours, as the light hits that side better.
How to Get There
From Isparta city center, it takes about half an hour by private car to Atabey. There are also inter-district minibus services, departing regularly from Isparta bus station to Atabey. Once you arrive in Atabey, head towards Müftü Neighborhood; when you find the Ertokuş Madrasah, the mosque will be right in front of you.
How Much Time to Allocate
The mosque itself is not a large structure and can be comfortably explored within 20-30 minutes. However, if you also include the Ertokuş Madrasah and its tomb directly opposite, this time can extend up to an hour and a half. If there are other historical sites in Atabey center, planning a half-day trip is sensible.
Suggested Itinerary
Visiting Feyzullah Pasha Mosque together with Ertokuş Madrasah is the most efficient; it takes only a few seconds to walk between them. If you are going to Atabey, you can include other historical structures in the district center in your itinerary and complete the day by returning to Isparta.
Budget Note
Visiting the mosque is completely free, there is no entrance ticket. Apart from the bus fare or fuel cost for your own vehicle to Atabey, no extra expenses are required.
Things to Pay Attention To
As it is an active mosque open for worship, it is necessary to be quiet during the visit and respectful during prayer times. Female visitors are expected to have a headscarf, and everyone is expected to enter with appropriate attire. Be careful not to disturb the congregation when taking photos.
Photo Spots
The 1861 inscription on the northern shoe part of the minaret is a good shot for those who want to see details up close. A wide-angle shot from outside the mosque, together with the madrasah courtyard, also shows Atabey's historical texture all at once.
History of the Structure
The name of the mosque is mentioned as Fazlullah in some sources and Feyzullah in others. The preservation of the old wooden columns and wooden carvings during the rebuilding in 1924 ensured that the mosque's original texture was carried to the present day. The brick minaret, on the other hand, has survived to the present day without being demolished, only being repaired in 1861.
