Seleukeia Sidera, Isparta'nın Atabey ilçesine bağlı Bayat Köyü yakınında Hisar Tepe üzerinde yer alan Pisidia dönemi antik kentidir; kale kalıntıları, tiyatro izleri ve kayalara oyulmuş mezarlar günümüzde görülebilmektedir.
Seleukeia Sidera likely takes its name from a colony founded by Seleucus I or his son Antiochus I. This city, built on one of the military roads in northern Pisidia, was referred to as Claudioseleucia on coins minted during the reign of Claudius II in the 1st century AD. Today, its ruins stand on Hisar Hill, just northwest of Bayat Village, which is part of the Atabey district.
On the hill, there are three intertwined castle systems. The best-preserved section is at the southeastern corner of the hill, built with large rectangular blocks. Part of the theater also remains standing. The most striking feature of the city, however, is the rock-cut tombs on the northwestern slope of the hill: rectangular-plan tombs made of block stones in the valley, followed by sarcophagus-type burials and a quarry a little further on. Approximately 2 km to the northeast, in the necropolis on Sırçalı Hill, there are mostly north-south oriented tombs carved into the bedrock.
Excavation work began in 1985-86 and 1993, continuing with surface surveys from 2008 onwards. Since 2019, interdisciplinary studies led by Prof. Dr. Bilge Hürmüzlü Kortholt from Süleyman Demirel University have been investigating a blacksmith's workshop, wine presses, and zooarcheology. A blacksmith's workshop dating back to the 5th century AD has also been unearthed in the area.
Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
There is no shade on the hill. In summer, as temperatures rise towards midday, morning hours are more comfortable. In spring and autumn, the weather is milder, but the intensity of excavation teams' work can vary during these periods. Since the excavation season generally coincides with spring-summer months, some parts of the area might be restricted due to ongoing work.
How to Get There
From Isparta city center, it's about a 20-25 minute drive to Atabey district. The transfer from Atabey to Bayat Village is short; you need to get as close as possible to Hisar Hill, which is 200 meters northwest of the village, by car and then climb the rest of the way on foot. Going by private car is the most practical option, as public transport is not frequent on this route.
How Much Time to Allocate
1-1.5 hours is sufficient to explore the castle ruins, theater traces, and tombs. If you also want to see the necropolis on Sırçalı Hill, add an additional 30-45 minutes. There is approximately 2 km between the two areas, and this part requires walking.
Other Stops Nearby
Seleukeia Sidera is a relatively lesser-known stop among the ancient cities of Isparta's Pisidia region. On the same day, you can add other historical sites in and around Atabey, or museums in Isparta city center to your itinerary. Compared to other ancient cities in the region (such as Sagalassos, Antiokheia), this place is quieter and has fewer visitors.
Things to Pay Attention To
The area is an active excavation site; interdisciplinary studies have been conducted by the Süleyman Demirel University team since 2019. Keep in mind that access to some areas may be restricted during excavation periods. The terrain is not flat, so sturdy shoes and water are necessary; there is no shade on the hill.
Good Spots for Photos
The castle ruin at the southeastern corner of the hill, with its large rectangular stone blocks, is the most striking part. The northwestern slope, where the rock-cut tombs are located, is also an interesting spot both for its historical texture and its view. The necropolis on Sırçalı Hill is a lesser-known but tranquil area.
History of the City
Seleukeia Sidera was founded as a colony by Seleucus I or his son Antiochus I on the military roads in northern Pisidia. In the 1st century AD, on coins minted during the reign of Claudius II, the city's name appears as Claudioseleucia. The ancient writer Claudius Ptolemy referred to the city as 'Seleukeia Pisidias'. Over time, most of the architectural fragments of the abandoned city were buried underground or moved to nearby structures.
