Rustempasa Kervansarayi was commissioned by Rustem Pasha, the Grand Vizier and son-in-law of Suleiman the Magnificent, and built by Architect Sinan in 1561. Located in Sabuni Neighborhood, directly behind the Old Mosque, on Ikikapili Han Street. The structure, consisting of two sections called the Great Inn and Small Inn, is composed of two-story rooms arranged around a rectangular courtyard. The ground floor was designed as storage and stables, while the upper floor served for accommodation. It is said that during the Ottoman period, caravans could stay free of charge for three days.
Today the structure has been restored and operates as a hotel and cafe. Even if you are not staying, you can enter the courtyard and have coffee. Visitors especially enjoy the colorful fountain in the courtyard and the evening illumination; the stone walls and arched corridors still preserve the 16th-century character. It is noted that there is no elevator to avoid damaging the historic structure, and staff can provide assistance with luggage.
While those sitting in the courtyard for coffee and desserts are satisfied with the atmosphere of the venue, there are mixed reviews about the restaurant experience. Some complained about order errors and taste, while many visitors praise the quality of service. Being in the city center, within walking distance of the Selimiye Mosque and bazaar, makes it easy to add to a day trip itinerary.
Guide's Note
About Rustempasa Kervansarayi
The structure was designed by Architect Sinan at the request of Rustem Pasha. Unlike Sinan's other caravanserais, it was built as a standalone accommodation structure rather than within a complex. It consists of two sections called the Great Inn and Small Inn; both are arranged around a rectangular courtyard on two stories. The ground floor contained stables for camels and storage rooms, while the upper floor housed rooms where caravanners stayed.
Best Time to Visit
If you plan to sit in the courtyard, evening or night hours are more enjoyable; the fountain's lighting becomes visible at those times. In summer months, early morning or evening visits are practical to escape the daytime heat. Combining it with a visit to the Selimiye Mosque and Old Mosque allows you to explore the same area without wasting time.
How to Get There
The caravanserai is located on Ikikapili Han Street in Sabuni Neighborhood, directly behind the Old Mosque. It is possible to reach it on foot from the city center. For those arriving by car, it is approximately a 10-minute distance from the center; since the hotel parking is limited, in case of full capacity you may be directed to paid parking facilities such as nearby Edpark. Clarifying parking time and fee information beforehand helps avoid surprise charges.
Time to Allocate
For those who only want to visit the courtyard and take photos, 15-20 minutes is sufficient. If you plan to take a coffee or dessert break, you can allocate 45 minutes to 1 hour. It can be easily added to the same day itinerary with other important stops in Edirne (Selimiye Mosque, Old Mosque, bazaar); everything is within walking distance.
Cafe and Restaurant Experience
Coffee and dessert service at the courtyard cafe are appreciated by visitors. Sitting next to the colorful fountain in particular offers a break intertwined with historic character. As for the restaurant, opinions are mixed: while some visitors are satisfied with service and taste, others complain about order errors and value for money. Checking your bill and confirming your order can help prevent potential issues.
Photo Spots
The colorful fountain in the center of the courtyard and the surrounding stone arched corridors are among the most preferred shots. From the seating areas in front of the upper floor rooms, wide-angle photos showing the entire courtyard can be taken. Evening lighting provides a different atmosphere compared to daytime shots.
Things to Note
There is no elevator in the structure as it aims to preserve its historic character; those wishing to go to upper floors must use the stairs. This may be an obstacle for visitors with mobility restrictions. If you are considering accommodation, there are a few different opinions about room odor and noise; it is useful to check current reviews before making a reservation.
