Defterdar Camii, Edirne'nin Talat Paşa Caddesi'nde yer alan, II. Selim döneminin defterdarı Mustafa Paşa'nın Mimar Sinan'a yaptırdığı tek kubbeli camii olup ücretsiz ziyaret edilebilir.
Defterdar Mosque is a work commissioned by Mustafa Pasha, who served as chief treasurer during the reign of Selim II, to Mimar Sinan. It has remained in the shadow of Selimiye but is one of the structures bearing Sinan's signature. Evliya Çelebi mentions in his travelogue the grandeur of the dome and how the minaret was built in proportion to it. In historical sources, it is also referred to as Defterdar Mustafa Çelebi Mosque or Defterdar Kara Mustafa Pasha Mosque.
The history of the mosque does not follow a straight line. The dome collapsed in the 1752 earthquake, and during the repairs carried out by Hacı Ruşen Efendi in the 1870s, the prayer hall was temporarily covered with a wooden roof. Its current state dates back to the restorations by the General Directorate of Foundations in 1953 and 1962. The dome, the portico (son cemaat yeri), the monumental gate (taçkapı), and the windows were reconstructed in accordance with their original form during these works.
It stands northwest of Sitti Sultan Mosque, within walking distance of the city center. It is not as crowded as Selimiye or Eski Mosque, which makes it a peaceful stop: it is possible to sit in its spacious courtyard for a few minutes and examine one of Sinan's more modest-scale works.
Guide's Note
The Story of Defterdar Mosque
The mosque was commissioned by Mustafa Pasha, who served as chief treasurer during the reign of Selim II, to Mimar Sinan. Evliya Çelebi states that the dome of the prayer hall was magnificent and the minaret was designed in proportion to this dome. The structure can also be seen as a mark left by the chief treasurers of the period in Edirne. This is why its name appears in different sources as Defterdar Mustafa Çelebi or Defterdar Kara Mustafa Pasha.
Best Time to Visit
Hours outside of prayer times are more suitable for visiting the interior of the mosque. Spring and autumn are more comfortable in terms of temperature for those who want to explore Edirne's other attractions on foot. In summer, it is advisable to avoid the midday heat and prefer the morning hours.
How to Get There
Defterdar Mosque is located in Edirne city center on Talat Pasha Street. It is possible to reach it on foot from the 'golden triangle' area around Selimiye Mosque and Eski Mosque. Thanks to its proximity to the city center, there is no need for separate transportation planning; it can be added to a daily walking route.
How Much Time to Allocate
45 minutes is sufficient to visit the mosque and its courtyard. This duration is short enough to easily fit into a one-day tour planned with Edirne's other historical mosques. It can be added to the same day as Selimiye, Eski Mosque, and Üç Şerefeli Mosque.
Suggested Route
Starting a mosque tour in Edirne city center with Selimiye, continuing from the point where the Mimar Sinan Statue is located, and then seeing Eski Mosque and Üç Şerefeli Mosque is a classic route. Adding Defterdar Mosque to the end of this route, as a slightly quieter closing point, is a good choice. This last stop, where the crowds have thinned, is also suitable for taking a breath after the day's intensity.
Things to Know Before Visiting
As the mosque is an active place of worship, visits may be restricted during prayer times. The rule of wearing a headscarf for women and removing shoes for everyone applies. The current state of the dome and the portico (son cemaat yeri) dates back to the 1953-1962 restorations; some of the original 16th-century texture was rebuilt with these repairs.
Good Spots for Photography
The spacious courtyard offers a comfortable area to frame the dome and minaret together. The lack of crowds makes it easier to capture peaceful photo moments, which are hard to find in busy places like Selimiye.
