Milli Mücadele ve Lozan Müzesi, Edirne'de Trakya Üniversitesi kampüsü girişinde yer alan, Kurtuluş Savaşı'nın Trakya cephesini ve Lozan Antlaşması'nı belgelerle anlatan müzedir. 1998'de açılmış, giriş ücretsizdir.
Karaaa is a region that was ceded to Turkey by Greece through the Treaty of Lausanne. For this reason, Trakya University decided in 1996 to build a monument, a square, and a museum here. Construction was completed in 110 days in 1998, and the opening was performed by the then-President Sleyman Demirel.
The museum consists of two main sections. The corridor on the ground floor displays the chronology of the National Struggle, the Armistice of Mudros, and maps of Svres and Lausanne. Room A is dedicated to biographies, while Room F focuses on the liberation of Thrace and the role of Refet Bele, the Commander of Thrace at the time, and Şakir Bey, the Governor of Edirne. In the Lausanne Museum section, one room is organized with documents by the nn Foundation, and the other by the Foundation for Establishing and Developing Historical Research and Documentation Centers. Here, personal belongings and caricatures of the Second President smet nn are also on display.
Located right at the entrance of the Trakya University campus, on the left side, the museum can be easily visited along with a campus tour. It can be included in an itinerary with nearby stops such as Karaaa Train Station and Stlk City Forest.
Guide's Note
The Story of the Museum
Karaaa is a region that was incorporated into Turkish territory from the opposite bank of the Meri River thanks to the Treaty of Lausanne. The Trakya University Senate decided in 1996 to build a monument and a museum here to commemorate this historical connection. The project team included representatives from the Edirne Governorship, Municipality, Trakya University, Mimar Sinan University, TÜ, and the nn Foundation. The foundation was laid on March 29, 1998, construction was completed in 110 days, and the museum was opened on July 19, 1998, by Sleyman Demirel.
When to Visit
The museum is small-scale and suitable for visits throughout the year. Since it is located within the Trakya University campus, weekends or holiday periods when the academic calendar is quiet offer a more relaxed visit. For those who want to see the campus activity, weekday afternoons can be preferred.
How to Get There
From Edirne city center, Karaaa can be reached by urban transportation vehicles. The museum is located right at the entrance of Trakya University campus, on the left side; it is reached without much walking as soon as you enter the campus. For those going by their own car, there are parking facilities around the campus.
How Much Time to Allocate
45 minutes to 1 hour is sufficient for the museum, which consists of two main sections. Those who want to carefully examine the chronology maps in the corridor and the exhibits in Rooms A and F may extend the duration a bit. It is possible to add Karaaa Train Station and Stlk City Forest to the program on the same day.
Other Nearby Stops
Combining the museum visit with other points in the Karaaa district is a practical option. The nearby Karaaa Train Station bears traces of the region's railway history. Stlk City Forest is suitable for a short walking break. Other museums within the Trakya University campus, the Sultan II. Bayezid Klliyesi Health Museum and the lhan Koman Sculpture and Painting Museum, can be added to the same itinerary.
Things to Know Before Visiting
Since the museum is located within a university campus, the activity in the surroundings may vary depending on the academic calendar. As there is no clear information on current opening hours and entrance fees, it would be beneficial to confirm with Trakya University or the Edirne Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before visiting.
Exhibition Rooms
In the ground floor corridor, the chronology of the National Struggle, the Armistice of Mudros, and maps related to the Svres and Lausanne treaties are exhibited. Room A focuses on the biographies of important figures of the period, and Room F on the process of Thrace's liberation, and the role of Refet Bele, the Commander of Thrace, and Edirne Governor Şakir Bey. The two rooms in the Lausanne Museum section are organized with contributions from the nn Foundation and the Foundation for Establishing and Developing Historical Research and Documentation Centers. Here, personal belongings and caricatures of smet nn are found.
