Nazır Çeşme, Edirne merkezinde 1585'te Aydınlı Mehmet Bey tarafından yaptırılan kesme taş meydan çeşmesidir. Kare kütleli, piramidal taş çatılı yapısı sade bir tasarımla Osmanlı dönem çeşme mimarisini yansıtır.

Nazır Fountain is a single-fronted public fountain made of cut stone, located in the city center of Edirne. It has a square mass, 3.71 meters high and 3.70 meters wide; its reservoir is covered by a pyramidal stone roof. Ornamentation is almost non-existent, and surfaces other than the front facade are left completely plain. This simplicity is actually the most striking aspect of the fountain: it stands as an example reduced to functionality among Edirne's more ornate monumental fountains.

The story of the fountain is based on the records of the historian Ahmed Bâdî. Aydınlı Mehmet Bey, who served as a judge (kadı) in Edirne during the reign of Sultan Murad III, had this fountain built in H.933 / M.1585. Over time, as the water channels deteriorated and the fountain stopped flowing, approximately three centuries later, in H.1279 / M.1862, Salih Efendi, also an Edirne kadı, had the fountain repaired in memory of his deceased daughter, Zeliha Kamile Hanım. Immediately next to it is the tomb of Muzaffer Pasha, the conqueror and guardian of Famagusta, Cyprus. It is possible to see traces of two different periods in a small area.

It is not a major tourist attraction, but if you are interested in Edirne's Ottoman-era fountain architecture, it is suitable for a short stop. A small stop that can be added to your itinerary while exploring the area around Selimiye Mosque or Eski Mosque.

About Nazır Fountain

A square-mass, 3.71-meter-high cut-stone public fountain. The reservoir cover is a pyramidal stone roof, and all surfaces except the front facade are left plain. There are almost no ornamental elements. This distinguishes it from Edirne's more richly decorated monumental fountains.

When to Visit

As it is an open-air structure, it can be seen in any season of the year. Spring and autumn months are more comfortable for walking in Edirne city center; summer months can be hot in the afternoon.

How to Get There

The fountain is located in the center of Edirne and can be included in city walking routes. Those coming from outside the city can get off at Edirne Bus Terminal and then reach the center by dolmuş or taxi, and from there walk to the fountain.

Location in the City

It is located in the central district, within the historical fabric. It is close to Edirne's main stops such as Selimiye Mosque, Eski Mosque, and Üç Şerefeli Mosque; it is a point that can be easily added to a one-day city center tour.

How Much Time to Allocate

The fountain itself can be explored in a few minutes. It is more logical to consider it as part of a one-day walking route along with other historical structures in Edirne city center.

Suggested Route

You can include Nazır Fountain in a walking route starting from Selimiye Mosque and visiting the areas around Eski Mosque, Üç Şerefeli Mosque, and Bedesten. It may appear as you walk through the narrow streets in the central districts; marking its location on the map beforehand will make your job easier.

Things to Note

The fountain is not actively flowing; it is preserved as a historical structure. It is worth looking closely to notice the tomb of Muzaffer Pasha next to it. Since it is a small area, it can be overlooked if not carefully observed.

Good Spots for Photos

The pyramidal stone roof and square mass are clearly visible, especially in the afternoon light. A shot from the front facade best reflects the fountain's plain stone craftsmanship.
