The Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial is a four-legged monument, 41.7 meters high, erected on Hisarlık Hill in Eceabat in memory of 253,000 martyrs; entry is free and it is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
This colossal structure, rising towards the sky on Hisarlık Hill as you pass through the Çanakkale Strait, is the most visited spot on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Its four legs are 41.7 meters high and designed in the shape of the letter "M", the initial of the word Mehmetçik. You can discern this letter from any direction you look. There are relief carvings depicting battle scenes on the legs.
The monument's story is as striking as itself. Its foundation was laid in 1954, but the state budget was insufficient to complete the construction, leaving the body as bare concrete. With a donation campaign launched by Milliyet Newspaper, students sent their pocket money, and women sent their bracelets. Thus, the monument was completed with public funds and opened in 1960. Today, the symbolic cemetery area behind it (open to visitors since 2007) is also part of the route.

How to get there
There is no direct road connection from Çanakkale city center to the memorial; you first need to take a ferry to Eceabat. From Eceabat, it's about a 25-minute journey towards Seddülbahir.
