Kilitbahir Castle Museum in Çanakkale is a museum housed in the triangular-planned castle built by Fatih Sultan Mehmed in 1463. It showcases the Ottoman defense system with its seven-story inner tower and highlights the historical importance of the Dardanelles Strait through its Piri Reis section.
Kilitbahir Castle was built by order of Fatih Sultan Mehmed after the conquest of Istanbul, at the narrowest point of the Strait, opposite Çimenlik Castle. The historian Tursun Bey of the period writes that the two castles were built facing each other and cannons were placed inside them. During the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, the castle was surrounded by walls and strengthened, and a two-line inscription above the entrance dates to 1541. The triangular-planned inner tower is the most striking part of the castle: 27 meters high, divided into seven floors, with a different theme on each floor.
The ground floor describes the history of the castle's construction and the triangular cistern beneath it, while the first floor exhibits defense systems and cannon mechanisms. The second floor is dedicated to Ottoman culinary culture, the third floor to strait trade, and the fourth floor to worship and social life. The fifth floor showcases 19th-century garrison life with findings such as ceramics and tobacco pipes unearthed during the 2011-2013 excavations. In the section dedicated to the famous navigator Piri Reis, who served in the castle, his world map is presented in comparison with a modern map. Sarı Kule (Yellow Tower) and Hisar Pee, an advanced defense courtyard, are also part of the tour route.

Kilitbahir Castle is a structure built by Fatih Sultan Mehmed after the conquest of Istanbul, along with Çimenlik Castle, to control the Rumelian side of the Strait. The historian Tursun Bey writes that the castle was built at the narrowest point of Eceova, and the one opposite it was named Sultaniye. Construction was completed in 1464-65 under the supervision of Yakub Bey, the sancak bey of Gallipoli and Bolayır at that time. The triangular-planned inner tower is located at the center of the structure and was used as the last refuge in defense.
Best Time to Visit
The tower stairs are stone and narrow, making the climb difficult in summer heat. Going before noon helps avoid both the heat and the crowds. In winter, the Strait wind is felt in the courtyard and the Hisar Pee section, so consider bringing a coat.
How to Get There?
The castle is right next to the Lapseki-Kilitbahir car ferry pier. Those arriving by ferry reach the gate with a short walk after disembarking. It can also be easily reached by dolmuş or taxi from Eceabat center. It is located on Yalı Street, which passes through Kilidlbahir village, with signposts guiding the way.

1-1.5 hours is sufficient to explore the seven-story inner tower, Sarı Kule (Yellow Tower), and the Hisar Pee courtyard. The duration may be slightly longer for those who stop to read in the Piri Reis section and at the exhibition panels.

Kilitbahir Castle is generally preferred as the starting point for Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial tours. After visiting the castle, it is a logical sequence to proceed to Namazgah Battery, and then to the martyrdom areas in the Kabatepe and Anafartalar regions. The combined ticket option reduces the cost if visited together with Namazgah.
Things to Consider Before Visiting
The stairs inside the tower are narrow and steep in some sections, so comfortable shoes are important. The museum is closed on Mondays, so do not include this day in your itinerary.

The Strait view can be captured from the narrow windows on the upper floors of the inner tower. The 1541 inscription at the entrance of Sarı Kule (Yellow Tower) and the artillery battery in the Hisar Pee courtyard are also among the preferred spots for photography.
