Oylat Cave

Oylat Cave is a fossil cave located in Hilmiye District, in the Inegol town of Bursa province, suspended on the canyon slope at the end of Oylat Canyon. Discovered in 2004, it has opened its doors to visitors since 2006. With its formation process spanning approximately 3 million years, it stands out as one of Turkey's oldest and most striking caves.

The cave consists of two main interconnected sections. The first section encompasses the narrow galleries extending from the entrance to the collapse hall; in this area, walls reaching up to 15 meters in height and abundant travertine pools with giant potholes are found. The second section is the large collapse hall reaching 20-25 meters in width. Across the hall are arranged large stalactite, stalagmite, and column formations. The height difference between the beginning and end of the hall reaches 93 meters. Inside the cave, creatures such as bats, cave crickets, worms, butterflies, and guano-producing organisms also live.

You can visit Oylat Cave during any season; however, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are both the seasons when the surrounding nature looks most beautiful and when the journey is most enjoyable. During these seasons, the greenery of Oylat Canyon and the cool air of the valley complement the cave tour.

During summer months, as the cave's internal temperature remains constant at approximately 19°C, it serves as a natural air conditioning for visitors exhausted by outside heat. In winter months, the roads around the cave may occasionally become slippery; it is advisable to check road conditions before visiting during this period. Crowds may increase on weekends and school holidays, so if possible, prefer weekday mornings for a more comfortable visiting experience.

By private vehicle: From the center of Inegol, enter the Domanics - Oylat junction and pass through Hilmiye Village. Approximately 1 km south of the village, you reach the cave. Total distance from Inegol is approximately 17-20 km, and from the center of Bursa approximately 70 km. There is free parking at the cave entrance.

By public transportation: You can reach Inegol from Bursa by bus or minibus. There are minibus and shared taxi services operating from Inegol towards Oylat; however, since service times and routes may vary, it is necessary to confirm current information from the local bus station or municipality. The most practical option appears to be private vehicle or car rental.

After reaching the cave, you get out of the vehicle and climb to the cave entrance via stairs and a walking path; considering this short walk, it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes.

Oylat Cave offers rich frames for photography lovers both inside and around it. The cave entrance, with its position on the canyon slope, creates a dramatic frame; especially when light from the entrance at midday filters through the stalactites, it creates striking compositions.

The travertine pools and giant potholes in the narrow galleries yield impressive results with long exposure technique. The large formations of stalactites and columns in the great collapse hall are ideal points for creating a sense of depth. Outside the cave, the Oylat Canyon panorama and the lush surrounding valley provide a valuable backdrop for wide-angle photographs. Since lighting conditions are low inside the cave, if you have a lens with wide aperture opening or a tripod with you, you will achieve much better results.

Since the cave's internal temperature remains around 19°C throughout the year, it is recommended to bring a light cardigan or jacket even during summer months. With the humidity level reaching 90%, surfaces and floors can be slippery; it is important to prefer non-slip soled, comfortable hiking shoes.

A staircase walking path is used to access the cave. For this reason, access is difficult for individuals with mobility restrictions; strollers are also not practical on this path. When photographing, considering the effect of flash use on cave fauna, care must be taken. Since the Museum Card is not valid, it will be practical to have the entrance fee ready in cash. Tea and coffee can be consumed at the cafe in front of the cave entrance.

A small cafe is located right in front of the cave entrance where tea and coffee can be consumed. For a more comprehensive dining experience, facilities in the nearby Oylat Hot Springs area can be preferred; the region offers various dining options along with hot spring hotels and pensions.

When returning to Inegol, Inegol meatball, which is synonymous with the city, is a flavor that must be tried. Inegol meatball restaurants are easily found in the city center and on main streets. If you're making a day trip to the area, taking light snacks with you, especially for families with children, will make your visit more comfortable.

It is possible to make Oylat Cave part of a nice day tour from Bursa or Inegol. Starting early in the morning from Inegol, you can first visit Oylat Cave. The cave tour takes 1-2 hours.

Then, you can move to the nearby Oylat Hot Springs area a few kilometers away and relax at thermal facilities, have lunch at the restaurants there. On the way back, you can also photograph the forest and canyon views around Hilmiye Village. Stopping at one of the famous meatball restaurants for dinner when returning to Inegol will be the most pleasant conclusion to this route. The entire program can be completed in approximately half to a full day.
