Afyonkarahisar Castle

Although Afyonkarahisar Castle is open every day of the year, the choice of season directly affects your experience. April-May and September-October are the most comfortable periods for climbing, as there are neither scorching heats nor freezing colds. During the summer months, especially at midday, the basalt rock heats up excessively, so it is wiser to prefer early morning or late afternoon.

A visit shortly before sunset offers a unique opportunity to watch the golden light falling over the city and the silhouette of the mountains appearing in the distance. In winter, caution is required as the steps can become icy; on sunny winter days, a quiet climbing experience away from the crowds can be had.

The castle is located in the city center of Afyonkarahisar, directly opposite the Grand Mosque, and is right in the middle of the urban protected area. Since the rock mass can be seen from almost every point of the city, getting lost is almost impossible.

For those arriving by bus, intercity lines connected to the intercity terminal take you to the center; from there, the castle can be reached by walking or a short taxi ride. For those arriving by car, parking can be found in the streets around the castle. Afyonkarahisar Train Station is also close to the city center, making transportation quite easy for those who prefer the train.

Afyonkarahisar Castle, being in the center of the city's historical fabric, can be combined with other important structures around it to create a beautiful walking route. Starting the visit from the Grand Mosque is a good idea; after visiting this 14th-century structure, the castle climb can be undertaken.

After the climb, while resting your tired legs, you can visit the Afyonkarahisar Museum to take a closer look at the region's archaeological past. A walk through the streets where the historical bazaar and bedesten are located, stopping at patisseries and restaurants offering Afyon's unique flavors, also becomes a natural part of the route. This entire itinerary can fit into approximately a half-day program.

The castle plays a dual role as both a place to be photographed and a place from which to take photographs. When viewed from within the city, the silhouette of the castle rising on the volcanic rock offers impressive shots, especially at sunset and sunrise. Wide-angle photographs taken from the courtyard of the Grand Mosque or the surrounding streets reflect the full grandeur of the castle.

From the top of the castle, the city's tiled-roof houses, minarets, and the plain stretching in the distance form a panoramic tableau. During sunset hours, the reflection of light on the rock surface and the city's silhouette appearing in the background create particularly striking images. Access to the castle is provided by 550 to 700 steps carved into the rock and partially arranged; although this number varies according to sources, the climb is definitely strenuous. Wearing comfortable and non-slip shoes is of great importance for both safety and comfort.

In some sections, the path can be quite narrow and steep; therefore, those with knee or joint problems should consider carefully. When going with small children, supervision is essential throughout the climb. Climbing after dark is not recommended; as lighting is insufficient, choosing early hours for evening visits is safer. Don't forget to take enough water with you, especially in summer.

Afyonkarahisar is one of Turkey's most established gastronomy cities, and the historical center around the castle is an ideal starting point to reach these flavors. Afyon clotted cream (kaymak) and Afyon sausage (sucuk), which are synonymous with the city's name, are two essential flavors that must be tried. Traditional breakfast places serving kaymak with plenty of buttered bread or with honey can be easily found around the historical bazaar.

After visiting the castle, taking a tea break with Afyon pişmaniye (floss halva) or lokum (Turkish delight) in historical patisseries is also a beautiful way to feel the spirit of the city. For lunch, traditional Anatolian cuisine served in restaurants in the city center can be preferred.

The known history of Afyonkarahisar Castle dates back to 1350 BC. Used as a strategic base during the Arzawa campaigns in the period of Hittite Emperor Murshili II, the castle was known as Hapanuva at that time. The volcanic basalt rock served as both a natural defensive fortress and maintained its strategic importance for centuries due to its dominant position in the region.

After the Hittites, the Phrygians, then the Romans and Byzantines used the castle. The structure, which took the name Karahisar during the Seljuk period, did not lose its importance after coming under Ottoman rule. Each civilization left its mark on the castle; the structure seen today consists of layers of this long history. The word Karahisar in the city's name directly refers to this black rocky castle.
