Place des Vosges

Place des Vosges is Paris's oldest planned square and the most dazzling corner of the Marais district. Built between 1605 and 1612 by order of Henry IV, this square is in perfect harmony with its symmetrical architecture and elegant red-brick buildings. With 36 houses all designed in the same style, it is known as one of Paris's most beautiful and tranquil squares.

1-2 hours are sufficient to comfortably sit and observe Place des Vosges itself. Looking at the galleries around the square, sitting in a cafe, and people-watching is what most visitors want. Visiting Place des Vosges is completely free. However, sitting around the square for coffee or a meal should be planned within Parisian prices. A cup of coffee costs between 3-5 Euros, lunch is in the 12-25 Euro range, and dinner is at higher prices. Museum visits (Victor Hugo House, Picasso Museum, etc.) are separate expense items.
