I have prepared a six-stop route in Tekirdağ city center that you can fit into one day. With this trip, you will see the city's past, stretching from ancient times to the Ottoman Empire, and witness the story of Hungarian exiles. All stops are within walking distance of each other, so you can easily explore throughout the day.
Tekirdağ Archaeology and Ethnography Museum
This museum on Rakoczi Street is located in the old Governor's Mansion building. Built in 1927, this historical building houses artifacts ranging from the Thracian Kingdom to the Ottoman period. Particularly noteworthy are the examples of stone craftsmanship from Perinthos and the coin collections. You can allocate approximately 1.5 hours for a brief look into Tekirdağ's past.
Rakoczi Museum
This Ottoman house, where Hungarian Prince II. Ferenc Rákóczi spent his exile years, is a symbol of Turkish-Hungarian friendship. Purchased by the Hungarian Government in 1932, the museum reflects the Prince's personal belongings and the atmosphere of the period. The turtles in its garden and the complimentary postcard at the entrance are also pleasant details. Approximately 1.5 hours is sufficient to visit this historical house.
Rüstem Pasha Mosque
Built by Mimar Sinan in 1553-1554, this mosque is the work of Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha, son-in-law of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The square-plan mosque, made of cut küfeki stone, features noteworthy tulip-motif tiles and an ivory-inlaid walnut door. With its single minaret and two domes, it is one of Thrace's important Ottoman structures. Allocate 1.5 hours for the mosque visit.
Abide-i Hürriyet Monument
This monument, quite close to Rüstem Pasha Mosque, was built in 1908 to commemorate the proclamation of the Second Constitutional Era. Designed as a monumental fountain, this structure carries the city's historical texture to the present day with its Ottoman inscription. It is ideal for a short stop, along with the historical plane tree and other structures around it. Approximately 1 hour will be sufficient for a visit.
Historical Yalı Bath
Dating back to the 1600s, this Ottoman double bath is one of Turkey's largest waterfront baths. Preserving its original architecture with two large and ten small domes, the bath was restored and reopened in 2020. If you want to relieve your fatigue, scrubbing, foam, and massage services are also offered. You can allocate approximately 1.5 hours here.
Tekirdağ Martyrs' Monument
As the last stop of the day, you can visit this monument erected in 1952 in memory of the soldiers who were martyred in hospitals in Tekirdağ during the Gallipoli Campaign. Located on Muratlı Street, the monument, rising on a marble pedestal surrounded by trees, is part of the cemetery where approximately 10,000 martyrs lie. Allocate 1.5 hours for a short stop here to commemorate our martyrs.
You can easily complete this route in Tekirdağ city center on foot. For lunch, you can choose restaurants on Rakoczi Street and its surroundings. Dolmuşes (shared taxis) and buses are also available for urban transportation, but walking is the best option as the distance between stops is short.
