A 6-day travel plan stretching from Izmir to Istanbul. This itinerary combines the most special stops in the Aegean and Marmara regions, offering diverse experiences from ancient cities to natural beauties, Ottoman heritage to bustling bazaars. A new city, a new discovery awaits you every day.
How about embarking on a 6-day journey from the blue waters of the Aegean to the history of Marmara? Starting from Izmir and reaching Istanbul via Manisa, Balikesir, and Bursa, this route brings together ancient heritage, peaceful nature escapes, and traces of the Ottoman Empire. You will find a different discovery at each stop, a unique story in every city.
Candarlı
Candarlı, located north of Izmir and connected to Dikili, is one of the tranquil corners of the Aegean with its 4000-year history. The islands around the peninsula offer a beautiful view, especially at sunset. After visiting Candarlı Castle, you can cool off at the blue flag public beach. It's ideal for a peaceful start away from the crowds.
Bergama Museum
After Candarlı, you can proceed to Bergama and visit the Bergama Museum, which has been serving since 1936. Housing artifacts unearthed from the ancient city of Pergamon, the museum has a vast collection spanning from the Early Bronze Age to the Byzantine period. You can see original sculptures from the excavations of the Acropolis, Asklepion, and Red Basilica here.
Karaburun
On the second day, we head further south of Izmir, towards the Karaburun Peninsula. This secluded corner of the Aegean is known for its clear sea, deserted coves, and fishing villages. This is the right address for those who want to escape mass tourism. Enjoy nature by exploring spots like Sarıpıncık Lighthouse and Badem Bükü.
Erythrai Ancient City
Located in Ildırı Village near Karaburun, the Ancient City of Erythrai is one of the 12 Ionian cities. This port city, inhabited since the Early Bronze Age, features theater, acropolis, and city wall ruins. The ancient theater, built on a slope overlooking the sea, offers a historical experience intertwined with the Aegean view.
Turgutlu
We begin the third day of our route with the transition from Izmir to Manisa. Turgutlu district of Manisa stands out with its historical structures dating back to the Ottoman period, such as the Kybele Rock Relief, ancient tumuli, and Gavur Hamamı. This district, built on the fertile lands of the Gediz Plain, offers both agricultural and cultural vitality.
Aigai Ancient City
Located on Yunt Mountain in Manisa's Yunusemre district, the Ancient City of Aigai is one of the important centers of the Aiolis region, dating back to the 8th Century BC. On this volcanic hill 360 meters above sea level, you can see the ruins of a theater, agora, and city walls. It offers a different ancient world experience with its rugged nature and panoramic views.
Manisa Museum
Located in the Muradiye Madrasa, the only work of Mimar Sinan in the Aegean, the Manisa Museum exhibits archaeological and ethnographic artifacts spanning from Lydia to the Ottoman Empire. This museum, which has kept its doors open since 1937, carries a rich history dating back to the Thessalian Magnetes who participated in Homer's Trojan War, to the present day.
Ortunç Cove
Transitioning from Manisa to Balıkesir, we arrive at Ortunç Cove, located north of Cunda Island. Surrounded by pine forests, this cove is one of the island's most beloved natural spots with its clear and calm waters. Thanks to its sheltered position from the northerly wind, its waters usually remain still. You can take a peaceful break at the free public beach and camping areas.
Şeytan Sofrası
Şeytan Sofrası, located on a rocky hill 180 meters above sea level in Ayvalık's Küçükköy area, stands out with its panoramic views of the Ayvalık islands and Lesbos Island. It attracts a large number of visitors, especially at sunset. Be sure to visit to see the footprint rock and experience this view.
Sarımsaklı Beach
In Ayvalık, Sarımsaklı Beach, with its approximately 7-kilometer-long golden sandy beach and blue flag, is one of the most popular spots in the Northern Aegean. You can swim or take a long walk on the beach, cooled by the imbat wind. Entrance is free, and it stands out with its clean sea.
Üftade Mosque and Tomb
We begin the fifth day of our route with the transition from Balıkesir to Bursa. Located near the Hisar region in Bursa's Osmangazi district, the Üftade Mosque and Tomb houses the place of worship and tomb of the 16th-century mystic Üftade Hazretleri. With its simple architecture, muqarnas mihrab, and spiritual atmosphere, it is one of Bursa's lesser-known but impressive stops.
Osman Gazi Tomb
Located in the Tophane district, the Osman Gazi Tomb houses the sarcophagus of Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman Empire. Situated on a hill overlooking Bursa, in the same courtyard as the Orhan Gazi Tomb, this octagonal structure was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2014. Entrance is free, and it is important for feeling the founding spirit of the Ottoman Empire.
Uzun Çarşı
Uzun Çarşı, Bursa's historical trade center, is a vibrant shopping route that has maintained its function since the Ottoman period. This bazaar, full of textile, spice, and jewelry shops, is intertwined with the Covered Bazaar and Koza Han. You can experience traditional Bursa artisan culture and taste local delicacies.
Emir Sultan Complex
Located on the eastern hills of Bursa, at a dominant point overlooking the city, the Emir Sultan Complex is a group of structures built in the 15th century in the name of the mystic Emir Sultan, who came from Bukhara. Consisting of a mosque, tomb, and hammam, the complex is one of Bursa's most visited religious sites with its centuries-old plane trees and spiritual atmosphere.
Büyükada Aya Yorgi Greek Orthodox Church and Monastery
With the transition from Bursa to Istanbul, we reach the last day of our route. Located on the highest hill of Büyükada, approximately 200 meters above sea level, Aya Yorgi Church is one of Istanbul's most impressive religious and natural beauties with its history of over a thousand years. The walk after taking the ferry from the island makes your visit more meaningful. The Marmara Sea view is breathtaking.
Rumeli Fortress
Rising at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus, Rumeli Fortress is an Ottoman castle built by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in just 90 days in 1452. Spanning an area of 32,000 m², the fortress is historically and visually impressive with its three large towers, walls, and Bosphorus view. It is open to visitors as an open-air museum.
Çamlıca Hill
Located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, on the slopes of Üsküdar at an altitude of 260 meters, Çamlıca Hill is a viewpoint where you can see the Bosphorus, bridges, and the entire silhouette of the city in a single frame. Tea gardens, walking paths, and Çamlıca Mosque also await you on the hill. Ending the day here against the Istanbul view is a great option.
Throughout this six-day itinerary, you will discover a rich array of cultural heritage and natural beauties stretching from the Aegean to Marmara. By setting off early for inter-city transfers, you can shorten your travel time and spend more time at each stop. Don't forget to try local delicacies in each city for meals; especially Iskender kebab in Bursa, olive oil dishes in Balıkesir, and Bosphorus fish in Istanbul are a must-try.
