Doğubayazıt Urartian Castle is an ancient structure in Ağrı, 150 meters from Ishak Pasha Palace, built on a steep rock and containing remains from the Urartian period; admission is free.
This castle, located in the Belleburç area, is built on a monolithic rock mass approximately 5 kilometers east of Doğubayazıt center. Its exact construction date is unknown, but the remains are dated to the Urartian period. Inside the castle, rock tombs, temple ruins, and water cisterns can be seen. The surrounding caves were also used as part of the structure.
It is located at a distance of about 150 meters, almost adjacent to Ishak Pasha Palace. For this reason, most visitors make a short stop at the castle after visiting the palace, sometimes just taking a photo from afar and moving on. A point frequently mentioned in comments is that the castle remains in the shadow of the palace, whereas its position on a steep rock makes its height truly felt when viewed from below.
The structure is quite dilapidated today, and there are no signs or inscriptions around it explaining its history. The castle is not large-scale, but the steepness of the hill it is built on adds visual weight to it. Since Beyazıt Mosque and Ahmed-i Xani Tomb are also located right next to it, the area is suitable for a short historical walk.
Guide's Note
When to Visit
Since Doğubayazıt is a high-altitude region, winters are harsh, and walking on rocky terrain becomes difficult. The period from late spring to early autumn is more suitable in terms of both weather conditions and daylight hours. Going before noon leaves extra time for a day planned with the palace.
How to Get There
The castle is located approximately 5 kilometers east of Doğubayazıt district center, in the Belleburç area. Those using the road to Ishak Pasha Palace will already see the castle on the route; since it is about 150 meters from the palace, the most practical method is to go to the palace by car and then walk from there. Public transport options are limited; your own vehicle or a taxi can be preferred.
How Much Time to Allocate
The castle is not a large-scale structure; 20-30 minutes is sufficient to wander among the ruins and take photos. You can add this time to your Ishak Pasha Palace visit to create a half-day historical itinerary.
Suggested Itinerary
It makes sense to start the day with Ishak Pasha Palace and then take a short walk up to the castle after visiting the palace. You can also add the adjacent Beyazıt Mosque and Ahmed-i Xani Tomb to the same route. If time permits, you can go down to Doğubayazıt center and have lunch there.
Things to Pay Attention To
The castle is quite dilapidated today, and there are no signs or inscriptions around it explaining its history, so it is useful to gather some information beforehand. Since it is built on a steep rock, the ground is uneven; it is recommended to explore with sturdy shoes and careful steps. There are no access arrangements like stairs or ramps, so it is not suitable for those with mobility limitations.
Photo Spots
As visitors often mention, the castle looks more impressive when viewed from Ishak Pasha Palace. Shots taken from the palace courtyard or surrounding elevations clearly show the castle's silhouette on the steep rock. When viewed from the base of the castle, its height becomes more pronounced.
Historical Fabric of the Region
The area where the castle is located is actually like a small historical square; Ishak Pasha Palace, Beyazıt Mosque, and Ahmed-i Xani Tomb are all close to each other. Some visitors mention the lack of a comprehensive history museum in the region despite this density. The castle, as a structure believed to date back to the Urartian period, represents one of the oldest layers of the region.
