Kozan Castle (Sis Castle)

The most ideal periods to visit Kozan Castle are April–May and September–October. In spring, the surrounding hills turn green, and air temperatures are very suitable for walking. In autumn, the scorching summer heat is left behind, and the horizon appears clearer; this provides a great advantage for photography.

During the summer months, Adana and its surroundings can reach serious temperatures. If you plan to visit the castle during this period, choosing early morning hours is important for both comfort and safety. Although visiting in winter is possible, the stone ground on the castle roads can become slippery in rainy weather; therefore, sturdy-soled shoes are essential.

The most practical way to get to Kozan from Adana is to use the regular bus or minibus services departing from Adana Intercity Bus Terminal or Yüreğir Bus Terminal. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the route and vehicle type. Those coming by private car can easily reach the district center by following the Adana–Kozan highway.

Upon arriving at Kozan district center, the castle is approximately 1 km away. You can follow the road leading up to the castle by car, or those who want to see the historical texture more closely can climb the cobblestone streets on foot. It is also possible to reach the castle by following the route east of Kozan Dam, via the Kozan–Saimbeyli road.

You can comfortably explore the district in a single day, centering your visit around Kozan Castle. Depart from Adana in the early morning and first explore the historic Kozan houses and cobblestone streets on foot. After visiting the Hoşkadem Mosque on Köksal Street and the nearby Arıkan Mansion, begin your climb towards the castle.

After enjoying the panoramic view and taking your photos at the castle, descend to the district center around noon. You can shop in Kozan bazaar and try local delicacies. For those who wish to dedicate the second half of the day to the nearby Anavarza Ancient City, travel from Kozan to Anavarza takes approximately 30 minutes.

Kozan Castle offers multiple shooting locations for photography enthusiasts. When viewed from the castle walls, the Çukurova plain and Kozan district center merge into a single frame; wide-angle lenses are ideal for capturing this scene in the best possible way. Especially on mornings when a layer of fog hangs over the plain, the view becomes truly enchanting.

The cobblestone streets leading to the castle and the historic mansions are also suitable locations for strong compositions. Photos taken in front of wooden bay-windowed structures or in narrow street passages are valuable for documenting Kozan's unique architecture. For those who want to take advantage of the golden hour light, the one to two-hour period before sunset offers the softest light.

Kozan is a district that carries all the richness of Adana cuisine. In the restaurants in the district center, you can find local delicacies such as Adana kebab, shish kebab, liver, and lahmacun. After visiting the castle, the small artisan restaurants around the bazaar offer both an affordable and intimate dining experience.

It should also be remembered that Kozan is a district known for its orange and citrus groves; it is an ideal stop for drinking fresh fruit juice in season. Those who want to take a tea break can prefer the small coffee houses around the castle.

Since the castle is located in an open area on a hill, it is recommended to bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water. Especially in summer, the sun can be quite harsh. Some surfaces inside the castle can be uneven and slippery, so choosing sturdy-soled, non-slip shoes is important for both comfort and safety.

There are no regular toilets or cafeterias around the castle; therefore, it is advisable to meet your needs in the district center before your visit.
