Kozan Castle

Spring and autumn are by far the most comfortable periods to visit Kozan Castle. In April, May, September, and October, the weather is mild; both the climb and exploration within the castle are much more enjoyable. In summer, the humid and oppressive heat typical of Çukurova can reach 35–40 degrees Celsius; if you plan to visit during this period, it is strongly recommended to choose the early morning hours. Winter months are relatively cool and rainy; stone surfaces in the castle can become slippery when wet, so wearing sturdy-soled shoes is important.

The most practical way to reach Kozan from Adana is by regular buses and minibuses departing from Adana Intercity Bus Terminal or Yüreğir Bus Terminal. Your journey time may vary between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on the route. If you are using a private car, you can reach Kozan town center from Adana in approximately 45 minutes by following the D-400 highway. Once you arrive in Kozan center, the castle is located on the hill directly above the town, so it can be accessed on foot or by a short taxi ride. There are parking areas available around the castle.

After reaching the castle, first take a general tour by following the outer city walls to easily grasp the scale of the structure. Then, move to the inner castle to explore the corridors connecting the six sections and the dungeons accessed by 20-30 step stairs. Don't forget to look for secret passages; these narrow passages form the most interesting corners of the castle. After the castle tour, on your way down, we recommend seeing the historical wooden and stone mansions on Köksal Street, the Hoşkadem Mosque, and the nearby Arıkan Mansion. Completing this entire route at a relaxed pace will take approximately 2 hours.

Kozan Castle is a true treasure for photography enthusiasts with its vast views overlooking the Çukurova plain. From the castle bastions located at 400 meters high, the plain, the town center, and distant mountains fit into the same frame. Especially early morning hours and late afternoon are when the soft light bathes the walls in golden hues. Beams of light filtering through the narrow stone stairs of the dungeons also offer interesting compositions. The cobblestone streets leading up to the castle and the historical mansions provide an ideal backdrop for unique shots where urban fabric and history intertwine.

Kozan is a district that carries all the richness of Adana cuisine. After visiting the castle, experiencing the duo of Adana kebab and şalgam suyu (turnip juice) in the restaurants in the town center has almost become a mandatory ritual. Due to the region being surrounded by citrus groves, fresh orange and lemon juices are also frequently encountered on the streets. Tahini and molasses sold in Kozan's local markets, along with homemade jams, are among the best flavors you can take home. Small family-run breakfast places in the town center offer a good starting point for those planning a morning excursion.

Some sections within the castle have uneven and slippery stone floors; therefore, walking with high heels or thin-soled sports shoes can be difficult. Choosing sturdy, non-slip walking shoes will both increase your comfort and ensure your safety. If you are visiting in summer, it is essential to bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen. Since there are no sales points within the castle, it is recommended to procure your snacks and drinks beforehand. A flashlight or phone light may be useful when descending into the dungeons; some sections can be quite dim. If you are coming with children, we recommend being careful near the edges of high bastions.

Kozan Castle is also referred to as Sis Castle in historical sources; this name comes from Sis, the pre-Ottoman name of the district. With traces of settlement dating back to 3000 BC, it is considered one of the oldest castles in the region. Serving as an important strategic center between the beginning of the 4th century BC and the 3rd century BC, the castle was used by many powers seeking to dominate Çukurova. Its construction in the form of an amphitheater is noteworthy as it reflects the engineering understanding of the period. With its 44 towers and bastions arranged in two groups, its walls surrounding the inner castle, and its six interconnected sections, the structure presents a comprehensive example of the defense architecture of its era.
