Muradiye Waterfall is a natural waterfall located on the Bend-i Mahi Stream in Van's Muradiye district, fed by Tendürek Mountain, named after Murad IV; it transforms into an ice sculpture or a flower-surrounded view depending on the season.
Muradiye Waterfall is located near Karahan Village in the Muradiye district of Van province, approximately 10 km from the district center. This natural formation, created by the Bend-i Mahi Stream originating from Tendürek Mountain, is named after Ottoman Sultan Murad IV, who set out on the Baghdad campaign in the 17th century. The height of the waterfall varies between 18 and 50 meters according to sources; while the Van Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism takes 18 meters as a basis, some local sources give higher figures.
The waterfall displays four different faces in four seasons. In spring, the flow of the stream increases due to melting snow, creating a captivating scene with the colorful flowers surrounding it. In winter, the flowing waters partially or completely freeze; the resulting ice stalactites transform the waterfall into a completely different sight. On the opposite bank of the waterfall, there is a recreation area heavily used by the local people. Best Time to Visit
The most suitable period to see Muradiye Waterfall is between April and June. The melting snow from Tendürek Mountain significantly increases the flow of the stream during these months; the waterfall reaches its most powerful and roaring state. The surrounding flowers also bloom during this period, adding a distinct vibrancy to the scenery.
In winter, especially in January and February, the flowing waters partially or completely freeze, turning into ice stalactites. A winter visit is highly valuable for those who want to capture this view; however, attention should be paid to vehicle preparation as there might be snow and ice on the Van–Muradiye road. In mid-summer, thanks to the coolness of the mountain air, the area around the waterfall becomes a popular spot for those looking to escape Van's heat.
How to Get There
If you are departing from Van city center, follow the Van–Erciş Highway. After turning at the Muradiye–Çaldıran junction and driving approximately 20 km further, you will see signs directing you to the waterfall at the Karahan Village turn-off. The distance to Muradiye district center is about 10 km, and to Van city center is 80 km.
There is no regular public transport line in the region. The most comfortable way to reach it is by private vehicle. Although there are minibus services from Van to Muradiye, since the waterfall is 10 km from the district center, you may need to plan additional transportation from the minibus stop.
Photo Spots
The platform directly opposite the waterfall offers the most classic angle to frame the falling water. Shots taken from the suspension bridge leading to the waterfall can capture both the bridge itself and the water curtain in the background.
In winter, the texture created by the ice stalactites looks particularly striking in the morning light. In spring, a wide-angle lens will make it easier to frame the waterfall with a flowery foreground. It is also possible to capture the general silhouette of the waterfall from the recreation area on the opposite bank.
How Much Time to Allocate
Muradiye Waterfall can easily be planned as a day trip from Van. 1.5 to 3 hours is sufficient to explore the waterfall, take photos, cross the suspension bridge, and spend time in the recreation area on the opposite bank.
If you are considering camping, the area around the waterfall offers a suitable spot for this experience. In this case, planning at least an overnight stay will allow you to see the waterfall in different lighting conditions and fully experience the tranquility of the region.
Route Suggestion
If you are departing from Van, you can combine Muradiye Waterfall with other natural areas located on the same route. A short stop in Erciş on the Van–Erciş road, followed by a visit to Muradiye, allows you to see multiple points in one day.
After the waterfall, you can return to Muradiye district center for a lunch break, then complete your return route to Van by passing through the Tendürek Mountain area. Part of the road is mountainous and winding; take this into account when calculating driving time.
What to Eat
Dining options around the waterfall and near Karahan Village are quite limited. In Muradiye district center, you can find small restaurants and places offering village breakfast. The indispensable Van breakfast, with herbed cheese, honey, and clotted cream, can be experienced in the district center in the morning hours.
If you are planning a long nature walk or camping, it is recommended to obtain your food and drinks from Van or Muradiye district center. Suitable areas for picnics are available in the recreation zone opposite the waterfall.
Things to Consider
In winter, driving conditions on the Van–Muradiye road can become difficult due to snow and ice. If you are planning a winter visit, it is important to have all-season tires or chains. Check road conditions from local sources before your visit.
The rocky ground around the waterfall becomes slippery when wet; choose sturdy, non-slip shoes. There is also information that an entrance fee is requested by commercial establishments in the vicinity; confirm the current amount and payment point before your visit.
