Pizan Hüsrev Bey Madrasa

Since Pizan Village is located in the mountainous Başkale district of Van, traveling in winter months becomes quite difficult. As snow and adverse weather conditions can close village roads, the period between June and September is the safest and most comfortable time to visit. During these months, the weather is clear, and village roads are passable. Early weeks of autumn can also be preferred; however, from mid-October, the weather in the region rapidly cools down.

The most practical way to reach Başkale from Van city center is by Başkale minibuses departing from Van bus terminal. After arriving at Başkale district center, you need to continue to Pizan (Örenkale) Village by private vehicle. There are no regular public transport services to the village; therefore, going with a rental car or accompanied by a local guide is the most advisable option. Since the village road is uneven, high-traction vehicles should be preferred.

30–45 minutes are sufficient for the madrasa itself; however, if Pizan Castle and the historical kümbets, also located in the same village, are to be visited, it would be more appropriate to allocate half a day. When combined with Başkale district center and other historical sites in the vicinity, planning a full day from Van for this route is sensible. If you depart from Van around 07:00–08:00, it is possible to return by evening.

Starting from Van city center, first proceed to Başkale district center and take a short break there. Then, continue to Pizan (Örenkale) Village and visit Pizan Castle, Hüsrev Bey Madrasa, and the historical kümbets in order. Since the three structures are located close to each other, you won't lose much time between them. On the way back, you can have lunch at a local restaurant in Başkale.

The most attractive photo spot of the madrasa is its inscribed entrance gate; the stone craftsmanship and inscription details are ideal for close-up shots. The arches framing the porticoed courtyard also offer strong compositions for architectural photography. Thanks to the structure's location on sloping terrain, wide-angle shots taken from a slightly elevated position yield impressive results, along with the mountainous landscape surrounding the madrasa. When viewed from Pizan Castle, the madrasa and the surrounding village can be seen together.

Before heading to Pizan Village, make sure your car's fuel tank is full; it's difficult to find a gas station outside Başkale. There are no food, drink, or accommodation facilities in the village, so it's recommended to bring enough water and snacks. Appropriate footwear is essential as the road to the madrasa is sloping and stony. It would be advisable to call the Van Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before you go to inquire about visiting hours and possible entry conditions.

Pizan Hüsrev Bey Madrasa is one of the rare examples of 17th-century Ottoman-era Eastern Anatolian madrasa architecture in the region. Measuring approximately 24.6 x 17.8 meters externally, the structure has a rectangular plan and is organized around a courtyard with porticoes on two sides. The rooms arranged behind the porticoes are designed in accordance with the traditional madrasa function. The inscription above the entrance gate serves as a historical source, documenting both the construction date and the identity of its patron. When viewed together with Pizan Castle and the kümbets in Başkale, the structure reveals the layered historical heritage of the region from both pre-Ottoman and Ottoman periods.
