When to Visit Van?

The ideal period to visit Van is between May and October. The city, located at a high altitude (approximately 1,650 meters), has cool and sunny summers; afternoons spent on the shores of Lake Van are extremely pleasant. June and September are periods when the crowds are relatively smaller and the weather is most balanced.

In spring, especially from late April to early May, Muradiye Waterfalls and the surrounding valleys are at their most vibrant; melting snow waters literally bring the waterfalls to life. Winter months are harsh, snowfall can continue for a long time, and some district roads may close. If you are interested in winter sports, it is possible to find snow in the surrounding mountains until March, but we recommend checking transportation conditions in advance.

Boat trips to Akdamar Island are generally organized between April and October; in winter months, depending on weather and lake conditions, trips may become irregular. Planning your trip according to these dates will ensure you complete your itinerary without disruption.

How to Get to Van?

By Plane: Van Ferit Melen Airport offers direct flight options from many major cities in Turkey, especially Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Airlines such as Pegasus and Turkish Airlines operate regular flights on this route. The airport is approximately 6 kilometers from the city center; you can easily reach it by taxi or shuttle services.

By Bus: Bus services are available from Istanbul to Van; however, the journey can take approximately 24 hours. As it is a long journey, we recommend choosing a plane, especially if you have time constraints. Bus tickets can be obtained through various companies.

By Car: Van is connected by road to other cities in Eastern Anatolia. Highways coming via Erzurum or Diyarbakır can be used; however, it is important to check weather conditions in mountain passes in advance, especially during winter months.

City Transportation in Van

In Van city center, minibus (dolmuş) lines are widely used for transportation. Beşyol Square is one of the city's important transfer points; from here, it is possible to reach many places, including Van Castle, by minibus. Minibus fares are quite affordable.

The Belvan Card issued by Van Metropolitan Municipality is a transportation card that can be used for public transport within the city; it is valid within Van provincial borders with full, discounted, and free options. You can obtain the card from sales points designated by the municipality.

To reach points outside the city such as Akdamar Island, Çavuştepe Castle, or Muradiye Waterfalls, renting a car or joining daily tours with tour companies is the most practical method. Taxis are also a common means of transport, but for long distances, we recommend agreeing on the price in advance.

Places to Visit in Van

Van Castle and Tuşpa: Van Castle, built during the Urartian Kingdom period, is the symbol of the city. At the foot of the castle are the remains of the ancient city of Van (Tuşpa). The view of Lake Van from the castle hill is magnificent; especially at sunset, the scenery from here is unforgettable.

Akdamar Island and Church of the Holy Cross: Located on an island in Lake Van, this 10th-century Armenian church is fascinating both architecturally and historically. The island can be reached by boat from Van city center. The church is a monumental museum that can be visited with a Museum Pass.

Hoşap Castle: Approximately 60 kilometers from Van city center, this Ottoman-era castle, built on steep rocks, is a favorite among photography enthusiasts with its impressive silhouette.

Çavuştepe Castle: Another important Urartian-era castle and settlement. Excavation works are still ongoing, and the Urartian inscriptions and temple ruins here captivate history enthusiasts.

Muradiye Waterfalls: Approximately 80 kilometers from Van, these waterfalls offer a visual feast with their vigorous flow, especially in spring. With its surrounding picnic areas, it is also an ideal day trip spot for families.

Vanadokya (Van Fairy Chimneys): This natural wonder, reminiscent of Cappadocia, is one of Van's lesser-known but definitely must-see spots. The fairy chimneys, formed by the erosion of volcanic rocks, offer perfect shots for photographers.

Van Museum and Urartu Museum: These museums are indispensable for those who want to deeply understand the city's history. The collections displaying artifacts from the Urartian period reveal how deeply rooted the region's civilization is.

Van Cat House: For those who want to see the world-famous Van Cat up close, the Cat House within Yüzüncü Yıl University is open to visitors. With its blue and yellow eyes, this unique breed is the city's cutest symbol.

Where to Stay in Van?

Accommodation options in Van are concentrated in the city center. Cumhuriyet Street and its surroundings are the most frequent areas for hotels; from here, it is possible to reach both the central points of the city and minibus routes within walking distance.

The city offers a mix of boutique hotels, comfortable mid-range hotels, and budget-friendly guesthouses. Hotels offering Lake Van views are particularly in demand; if you prefer this option, we recommend making your reservation in advance.

During the high season, considered July-August, occupancy rates increase. Especially during holiday periods, the number of visitors to the city significantly rises, so early booking during these times provides an advantage in terms of both price and availability.

What to Eat in Van?

Van's cuisine consists of some of Turkey's richest and most unique local delicacies. The first thing you should do when you come to the city is to experience a Van breakfast. This table, consisting of more than thirty varieties, offers Van herb cheese, honey, clotted cream, kavut, mırra (bitter coffee), and many other local products together. Breakfast places are common throughout the city, and we recommend dedicating your morning hours to this experience.

Van herb cheese is a type of cheese prepared with wild herbs unique to the region, notable for its distinctive sharp aroma. It is consumed both fresh and aged; it is one of the most valuable gifts you should take with you when leaving the city.

Among the local delicacies, keledoş (meatball with bulgur), borani (yogurt-spinach dish), and various lamb dishes also stand out. For dinner, choosing local restaurants in the city center will be more suitable for both your budget and your taste buds.

Budget Planning in Van

Van is generally a more affordable destination compared to cities in western Turkey. Accommodation, food and drink, and city transportation costs are relatively low. However, plane tickets, especially last-minute purchases, can constitute a significant portion of your budget; therefore, buying tickets early saves money.

Museum Pass is valid in most of the places to visit; Van Castle, Akdamar Monument Museum, and Van Museum are included in this scope. If you have a Museum Pass, you can enter these places for free. If you don't have a Museum Pass, you will have to pay a separate entrance fee for each venue.

To reach points outside the city (Hoşap Castle, Muradiye Waterfalls, Çavuştepe), you need to add car rental or tour participation costs to your budget. Day trip options may be more economical for small groups compared to individual car rental.
