When to Visit Tokat?

The ideal time to visit Tokat is during the spring and autumn seasons, between April-June and September-October. During these periods, the weather is mild, and nature is vibrant and green; you can comfortably explore both historical structures and the surrounding villages and natural areas.

Snowfall can be seen in winter, and access to some surrounding districts may become difficult. Nevertheless, in winter, the historical structures in the city center can be visited in a secluded and tranquil atmosphere.

Local festivals and cultural events such as Tokat Days are usually organized during specific periods; following the announcements of Tokat Municipality when planning your visit will be beneficial to experience the city's lively atmosphere.

By Plane: The closest airport to Tokat is Tokat Airport. Direct or connecting flight options are available from Istanbul and Ankara; however, the number of flights may be limited. You can reach the city center from the airport by taxi or shuttle services.

What to Eat in Tokat?

Tokat cuisine is considered one of Anatolia's most unique and rich regional cuisines. It is unthinkable to leave the city without trying Tokat kebab. Prepared with tomatoes, potatoes, garlic, and lamb, this kebab is cooked in a tandoor oven and has a distinctive deep flavor.

In addition to Tokat kebab, bandırma (meat broth poured over oily bread), çekme helva (pulled halva), pestil (fruit leather), and köme (walnut-stuffed fruit leather) are among the city's other prominent delicacies. Pestil and köme are among Tokat's geographically indicated products and are also highly preferred as gifts.

There are many local restaurants around the historical bazaar in the city center and in Sulusokak. Choosing these small, family-run establishments instead of large chain restaurants will be better for both your wallet and your palate.

Where to Stay in Tokat?

Since Tokat is not a major tourist center, accommodation options cannot be compared to cities like Istanbul or Ankara; however, there are various comfortable hotels available in the city center. Prices are generally below the Turkish average, making it possible to have a budget-friendly accommodation experience.

Choosing hotels close to the city center ensures you are within walking distance of historical sites. Especially hotels around Sulusokak Bazaar and Tokat Castle are advantageous in terms of location. It is recommended to check current prices and availability on reservation platforms.

For a more unique experience, you can research boutique accommodation options converted from the city's historical mansions. For those planning day trips to surrounding districts like Ballıca Cave, staying in the city center will be the most practical solution.

Culture and History of Tokat

Tokat has a deep-rooted history dating back to 6000 BCE. The Hittite, Pontus Kingdom, Roman, Byzantine, Danishmend Principality, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods have all left their mark on these lands. Especially during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, Tokat was an important trade and cultural center, hosting many inns, caravanserais, madrasahs, and mosques.

The city's block printing tradition has continued for centuries. Tokat block prints, produced using the hand-printing technique, hold a special place in Turkish handicrafts with their unique motifs and colors. You can observe this tradition live in the workshops in Sulusokak Bazaar.

Tokat is also the land where the Danishmendname epic takes place. The districts and villages around the city are also historically very rich; the Zile district went down in history as the place where Caesar uttered his famous words Veni, Vidi, Vici in ancient times.

Shopping in Tokat

Among the most valuable souvenirs you can take home from Tokat are pestil and köme. Pestil made from grape molasses and walnut-stuffed köme are among the city's geographically indicated products and cannot be found in many parts of Turkey. You can buy fresh and reliable products from shops around the historical bazaar.

Tokat block prints are also among the city's most unique souvenir products. These fabrics, produced using the hand-printing technique, are sold as scarves, tablecloths, and decorative items. Sulusokak Bazaar and Arastalı Bedesten are the right addresses to find these products.

In addition, local copper craftsmanship products, handmade carpets, and regional food products are among the options you will frequently encounter in Tokat's bazaars. Prices are quite reasonable compared to big cities, and the bargaining culture is still alive.

Budget Planning in Tokat

Tokat is one of Turkey's most budget-friendly cities. Accommodation, food and drink, and transportation costs are significantly lower than in big cities. Although average daily expenses vary according to personal preferences, the city is extremely suitable for an economical trip.

Entry to most historical structures is either free or possible for a symbolic fee. A separate entrance fee is charged for Ballıca Cave; it is recommended to inquire about the current price before your visit. Lunch in local restaurants is quite affordable, and you can taste local delicacies like Tokat kebab at much more reasonable prices compared to big cities.

The bus transportation option is both more economical than flying and offers a closer arrival point to the city center. The abundance of distances that can be explored on foot within the city also significantly reduces transportation costs.
