Kaz Lake

The migration of birds begins in March and continues until early May. Early arriving species hatch their first chicks between late April and mid-May. Towards the end of June, the chicks are ready to fly, and the first migrations begin again in early July. Species that prefer to spend the winter at the lake arrive in the region in September-October. Therefore, the most intense period for bird watching is spring. Especially April-May stands out for both hatching and high species diversity.

It is 39 kilometers away from Tokat city center. Since it is connected to the Pazar district, the shortest distance is from Pazar center: only 11 kilometers. For those coming from Turhal, the distance is 19 kilometers, and from Zile, it is 23 kilometers. Going by your own car is the most practical way; for public transport, you need to follow the vehicles departing from Pazar district center. The agricultural lands of the Kazova plain accompany you along the way.

1-2 hours are sufficient to walk around the lake and observe from the bird watching towers. If you plan to take photos or camp, you might consider staying for half a day or one night. It is stated that there are gazebos and a camping area in the region, so a longer program is also possible for those planning a picnic.

The bird watching towers in the area are the best spots for both scenery and photography. Among the 108 recorded bird species are black stork, white stork, ruddy shelduck, grey heron, common coot, common pochard, and various duck species. Early morning hours are when bird activity is most intense; these hours can also be preferred for lighting. The reed bed and wide water surface provide a suitable backdrop for wide-angle shots.

Some visitor reviews criticize the area for being neglected, with reeds and grasses becoming dense. Some have also complained about mosquito density in the summer months. Due to it being a wetland, especially in the evenings and summer, it would be beneficial to carry insect repellent. Also, the entrance fee and parking situation can vary according to sources, so it's wise to get local information before going.

Kaz Lake is often mentioned along with Ballıca Cave in the list of places to visit in Tokat. If time permits, Mahperi Hatun Caravanserai can also be added to the itinerary. Thanks to its proximity to the Pazar district, it can be planned as a half-day nature break after a visit to Tokat city center. If bird watching is a priority, it is best to plan the route according to the March-May period.

Kaz Lake is a Wildlife Development Area with wetland status. The absence of industrial facilities around the lake contributes to the preservation of its water and ecosystem. Activities such as nature walks and nature photography can be done in the area. The villages of Üzümören and Çiftlik are located in the immediate vicinity of the lake, which also has agricultural importance for the local community.
