Halit Street-Sulu Street

Since the street is an open-air area, it can be visited all year round. Spring and autumn months offer the opportunity for walks away from both the heat and dense crowds. In summer, as the stone ground heats up in the afternoon, it is more comfortable to prefer early morning or late afternoon. In autumn, the color of the trees facing the street, along with the wooden bay windows, creates a unique photographic frame.

Halit Street-Sulu Street is located in Tokat city center and within walking distance of Tokat Governorship. For those arriving by intercity bus, the bus station is close to the center; from there, it is possible to reach the street by taxi or city minibuses to the center and then walk. If you come by your own car, there are parking areas near the street, but the street itself is a pedestrian zone.

The most logical route is to start the walk from the Gülbahar Hatun Mosque side, pass through Halit Street entirely, and proceed towards the Grand Mosque. Along this route, you can see the bay windows and stone walls of old Tokat houses and small passages opening into side streets. The stone birdhouse at the corner of the Grand Mosque is a detail worth stopping to look at at the end of the route.

The street itself can be walked in a short time, 45 minutes to 1.5 hours is sufficient. However, for those who want to take photos, wander into side streets, or browse the shops along the way, the time may extend. If you are planning a one-day city center trip in Tokat, it makes sense to include this street in the same route as the Grand Mosque, Gülbahar Hatun Mosque, and Taşhan.

The points where the wooden bay windows extend into the street offer good shots, especially in the afternoon with the shadow-light contrast. The stone birdhouse detail at the corner of the Grand Mosque is an element that most visitors miss but stands out in photographs. Wide-angle shots that capture both sides in the narrow parts of the street also reflect the texture well.

Since the street is paved with stone and sometimes sloped, it is necessary to choose comfortable shoes. Passing with a stroller or wheelchair can be challenging, as there are irregularities in the ground. Shop and artisan hours on the street can vary by day and season, so it is useful to call in advance if you plan to visit a specific place.

Sulu Street and Halit Street form the old commercial and residential center of Tokat. Sources refer to a history of 900 years. Traces from different periods, from Roman to Ottoman, are accumulated in these narrow streets. Today, it is officially considered an example of civil architecture and cultural tourism, a central stop for those who want to see the city's old identity.
