Dumanlı Plateau is located within the borders of Arısu Village, approximately 70 kilometers from Tokat city center and 35 kilometers from Almus district center. It takes its name from its fog-covered appearance. Especially in the morning hours, the fog that settles over the plateau creates its most familiar sight. Its altitude of around 1600 meters provides cool weather even in summer.
Green grassy areas surrounded by beech, oak, linden trees and fruit trees offer a typical Black Sea hinterland plateau texture, accompanied by grazing animals. In autumn, the scenery completely changes as the leaves turn yellow and red. This seasonal transition is also a period that is frequently photographed in the region. When to Visit
June-September is the most suitable period for plateau weather. During these months, the grass is green, and the weather is cool but not hindering for hiking. In autumn, from late September to early October, the beech and oak forests begin to turn yellow, and this period is also preferred for landscape photography. In winter, road conditions can become difficult, so check road conditions before going after snowfall.
How to Get There
From Tokat city center to Almus district is approximately 35 kilometers, and from there to Arısu Village and Dumanlı Plateau is another 39 kilometers. The total distance is around 70 kilometers from the city center. The route passes along the shore of Almus Dam Lake, and the road itself is quite scenic. If you don't have your own vehicle, you can go to Arısu by village minibuses from Almus, but the frequency of services is low. Therefore, going by private car saves time.
How Much Time to Allocate
The plateau itself is a half-day stop. 2-4 hours is sufficient for short walks, taking photos, and having a picnic. It's logical to combine it with Almus Dam Lake and other points in Almus district center to complete the day, as it doesn't fill a whole day on its own.
Route Suggestion
Depart from Tokat and first take a short break on the shore of Almus Dam Lake, then continue towards Arısu Village. After spending a few hours at Dumanlı Plateau, you can plan lunch in Almus district center on the way back. There are other plateau points in the region such as Çimen Plateau and Topçam Plateau. If you have time, you can add these to your route as well.
Things to Consider
Tourist infrastructure (facilities like cafes, markets, toilets) is limited on the plateau. It is safer to meet your food and drink needs from Almus. Due to fog, visibility can decrease, so be careful when driving, especially in the morning hours. Cell phone reception may be weak in the area.
Photo Spots
The fog that settles over the plateau in the early morning hours provides the most iconic shot. In autumn, the points where yellowed beech and oak forests meet the grass are suitable for those seeking color contrast.
