Samsun Beaches

The best time to swim at Samsun beaches is between June and September. Since the Black Sea waters are cooler compared to the Aegean or Mediterranean, July and August are when the sea water is warmest. In May and October, the coast is almost empty; these months offer a much more peaceful experience for those who prefer walking and taking photos instead of swimming.

On summer weekends, especially during July-August, Atakum Beach gets quite crowded. If you want a calmer beach experience, it is recommended to visit on weekday mornings.

Atakum Beach is located approximately 10 km from Samsun city center. City minibuses and municipal buses run regularly to Atakum; this option is both economical and practical. If you are coming by private car, simply follow the coastal road, though finding parking can be difficult on busy days.

To reach Çatalcam Beach, you can use minibuses or a private car from the city center. After arriving in the city from Samsun Airport by taxi or airport shuttle, reaching the beach is quite easy.

Sunrise and sunset hours at Atakum Beach are the most productive times for photography. The long perspective of the coast, especially when it's almost empty in the early morning, offers impressive shots. While walking along the coast, you can capture the characteristic gray-blue tones of the Black Sea and the green hills in the background together.

The wide sandy shore of Çatalcam Beach also provides a good backdrop for wide-angle shots. The terraces of the coastal cafes offer an alternative angle for sea-view photographs.

The cafes and restaurants lined along Atakum Beach are a popular spot for both locals and visitors. Fish restaurants stand out in this area; fresh fish varieties, especially Black Sea anchovies, are a must-try. Visitors note that affordable snacks can be found at municipal facilities.

There are also tea gardens and buffets along the coast. To try Samsun's unique pide varieties, head a little inland from the beach, towards Atakum's main streets.

Black Sea waves and currents can be stronger compared to the Aegean or Mediterranean. Especially when swimming with children, pay attention to warning signs and swim in areas supervised by lifeguards.

Visitors often mention that the number of showers and changing cabins on the beaches can be insufficient during the busy summer period; bringing an extra towel and a change of clothes will make things easier for you. It is also noted that there can be seasonal issues with cleanliness in some spots; not leaving your trash on the beach is important for both the environment and other visitors.

Samsun beaches alone are sufficient for a one-day program. You can spend a full day at Atakum Beach with a morning walk, swimming in the sea and a break at coastal cafes in the afternoon, and watching the sunset in the evening. If you combine it with other places to visit in Samsun (Bandırma Ferry Museum, Amisos Hill, Kızılırmak Delta), allocating 2-3 days to the city would be more efficient.
