Sheikh Muslihiddin Mosque

Sheikh Muslihiddin Mosque was built in 1486 by Sheikh Muslihiddin, a member of the Ahi organization. Sheikh Muslihiddin is said to have been among the architects of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet era. The structure is one of the rare examples of the early Ottoman wooden mosque tradition in the Sakarya region. Its survival for over 537 years clearly demonstrates the quality of the materials used and the craftsmanship of its builder.

The mosque is built entirely of wood, both inside and out, with stone-filled foundations. The wooden beams are joined using an interlocking technique; the use of nails or metal fasteners has been minimized. The rectangular-plan structure features a U-shaped women's section. There is an entrance door on the front facade and another on the right facade. The preference for Empire motifs in the decorations indicates that a different period's influence is also reflected in the structure. With its wooden minaret, this building holds a special place among mosques with wooden minarets in Turkey.

The Kaynarca district and its surroundings are at their most beautiful during the spring and autumn months. Summer months can also be easily preferred for the condition of the village roads. In winter, caution may be required on village roads due to rain and fog. Since the mosque is open during prayer times, it would be more appropriate to plan your visit so that it does not coincide with prayer times.

Sheikh Muslihiddin Mosque is located approximately 3 km outside of Kaynarca district, which is part of Sakarya province, in Büyük Kaynarca village. After reaching Kaynarca from Sakarya city center, you just need to follow the road to the village. Public transportation options are quite limited, so going by private car is the most practical way. The exterior of the mosque is the best photo spot, where all the details of the wooden craftsmanship can be seen. Morning hours, when sunlight directly illuminates the structure, highlight the texture and color tones of the wood. Indoors, the U-shaped women's section and Empire decorations also offer noteworthy visual details. The surrounding graveyard and rural landscape allow you to frame the structure within its historical context.

The mosque is actively used for worship; during your visit, please be quiet and maintain a respectful distance from worshippers. You are required to remove your shoes when entering. Women are expected to cover their heads. As the structure is a historical artifact, avoiding touching any surface is important for its preservation. There are no dining or accommodation facilities in the vicinity; it is recommended to bring water and snacks with you.

There are no restaurants or cafes in Büyük Kaynarca village. In Kaynarca district center, there are local eateries and tea houses. Islama köfte (meatballs with soaked bread) and Adapazarı-style döner, which are indispensable parts of Sakarya cuisine, can be found in the restaurants in the district center. Completing your visit with a meal in the district center would be a practical option.
