Şövalye Island

The most suitable period for Şövalye Island is between April and October. While the sea water is at an ideal temperature for swimming in the summer months, during shoulder seasons like May–June and September–October, the crowds are smaller and the weather is cooler. In July–August, the island and surrounding boats become more crowded; choosing early morning hours during this period provides a calmer experience. The view of Fethiye Bay from the high points of the island at sunset is particularly highlighted by visitors; planning an afternoon visit is therefore a logical choice.

It is not possible to reach the island by road; the only option is by sea. You can get to the island in about 5–10 minutes by water taxis and private boats that operate regularly from Fethiye Port or Çalış Beach pier. Its distance from Fethiye center is approximately 1.5 nautical miles. You can learn about water taxi schedules and fares from pier officials or Fethiye Municipality. It is also possible to cross by canoe; a good alternative for adventure seekers.

There are a few restaurants and cafes located by the sea on Şövalye Island. Fresh fish and seafood are among the main choices. Since the island is quiet and small, options are limited; it might be difficult to find a spot during busy periods. If you plan to stay for a long time, it might be more practical to bring snacks with you or eat in Fethiye before heading to the island.

Among the best photo spots on the island, the high sections where the castle ruins are located stand out; from here, both the Fethiye city skyline and both sides of the bay can be captured in the same frame. Stone structures meeting the turquoise sea in the sunset light yield strong results in vertical compositions. The small coves and stony shores around the island also offer natural frames. Even from a distance, postcard-worthy shots can be taken.

Motor vehicle traffic is completely prohibited on the island; all movement is done on foot. Since the paths are uneven in places, it is important to choose comfortable, non-slip shoes. If you plan to swim, we recommend bringing sea shoes as the shores can be stony. Confirm your return time with the pier official in advance; water taxi schedules may vary by season. There is no ATM on the island, so it will be practical to carry cash with you.

Şövalye Island can be considered a day trip destination connected to Fethiye; a 2–4 hour visit is sufficient to explore the island. Wandering through the castle ruins, swimming by the shore, and having lunch at a restaurant easily fit into this time. Accommodation options are also available on the island; an overnight stay can offer a different experience for those who want to completely escape the crowds of Fethiye.

Şövalye Island was part of the defense line of the ancient city of Telmessos. In the 15th century, the Knights of Rhodes (Knights of St. John), who dominated the region, fortified the island, building a castle, cisterns, and walls; the remains of these structures can still be seen today. Geographically, the island stretches in a long, narrow strip, acting as a natural breakwater for the waves entering Fethiye Bay. Şövalye Island remains the only island in Fethiye district with active civilian settlement, distinguishing it from many uninhabited islands on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.
