Orak Island

Orak Island is a small island, 1,800 meters long, located in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Gökova Bay. It falls within the borders of the Bodrum district, which is part of Muğla province. There is no permanent settlement on it; apart from a lighthouse and olive groves, there are no structures. This solitude is the most important feature that distinguishes the island from Bodrum's crowded bays.

The island's name comes from its sickle-like shape when viewed from a bird's eye perspective. Located directly opposite Bodrum's Kargıcık Bay, the island is approximately 15 kilometers offshore. Its shores are covered with olive trees, and its waters, as repeatedly emphasized by visitors in their comments, are extremely clear and deep blue.

The period between May and October is the most suitable time to visit Orak Island. The sea water is at an ideal temperature for swimming and diving during these months.

In July and August, boat traffic significantly increases; the bay can become crowded in the afternoon. For those seeking a quieter experience, early June or late September is a good choice. During these periods, sea conditions are favorable, and the crowds are relatively smaller.

The only way to reach the island is by boat. Daily boat tours organized from Bodrum center, Bodrum Harbor, and surrounding marinas are the most common option. Tours depart in the morning and return to Bodrum in the evening; the route usually covers several bays and islands.

It is also possible to reach the island by renting a private boat from Kargıcık Bay. The island, located approximately 15 kilometers from Bodrum center, can be reached by boat in 30-45 minutes. Before going, confirm the current departure time and itinerary with your tour operator.

Orak Island offers many different shots for photography enthusiasts. The spots where olive trees hang over the shore, contrasting with the turquoise water, the rocky coasts, and the area around the lighthouse are among the most preferred shots.

For underwater photography, the cape on the southern coast is ideal; schools of fish and rich seabed topography offer interesting visuals. In drone photography, the sickle shape of the island clearly emerges; however, relevant regulations should be checked beforehand.

There are no cafes, restaurants, or markets on Orak Island. The island is completely uninhabited and preserved in its natural state. You need to get your food, drinks, and snacks from Bodrum or from the boat you will be on.

Most daily boat tours include lunch; it's a good idea to ask if food is included before joining the tour. Bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and light snacks with you.

Since there are no facilities on the island, you need to meet all your needs in advance. Sunscreen, drinking water, and food must be with you. Pay attention to environmental rules to avoid harming marine life and the natural area; do not leave plastic waste.

The diving spots on the southern coast are designed for experienced divers; beginners are strongly advised to dive with a guide. Finding a spot on boat tours can be difficult during peak season; make your reservation in advance.

Orak Island itself does not have a specific entrance fee. The main cost is the boat tour fee departing from Bodrum. Tour prices vary depending on the operator, included services, and season; it is best to contact tour companies directly for current prices.

The option of renting a private boat can reduce the per-person cost for group travel. If you bring your own food and drinks, extra expenses are minimized.
