Gemile Island

The most suitable period to visit Gemile Island is between April–June and September–October. During these months, air temperatures are reasonable for walking, and the sea water is suitable for swimming. In July and August, due to the high influx of tourists to the Fethiye region, boat tours become crowded; moving on the island's narrow paths can become difficult. In winter months, boat services are largely suspended, making it difficult to plan a visit.

Since the island is not directly accessible by road, a boat is necessary. The majority of daily tour boats departing from Fethiye city center include Gemile Island in their itinerary. Alternatively, access to the island can also be provided from Soğuksu Bay, which is about a 10–15 minute drive from Ölüdeniz.

If you are coming from Muğla city center, you need to follow the Muğla–Fethiye highway towards Kayaköy, and then reach Soğuksu Bay. Since the distance to Fethiye is approximately 9 km, the island is quite close to most accommodation points in the region.

There are no food and beverage facilities on Gemile Island itself; don't forget to bring snacks and water before boarding the boat. After returning from the island, there are many restaurants and cafes around Ölüdeniz and Kayaköy. Small restaurants set among the stone houses of Kayaköy are a good option for tasting local Aegean cuisine. Restaurants along the Ölüdeniz coastline, on the other hand, stand out for their seafood.

Gemile Island offers several different layers in terms of photography. The Byzantine church ruins create a historical depth, especially when photographed from angles where Fethiye Bay is visible in the background. When climbing to the high points of the island, both the panoramic view of the bay and the silhouette of the mainland enter the frame. The paths in the shade of pine trees offer a unique atmosphere in the morning light.

Gemile Island requires a half-day program, including the boat trip. Although the island is small, 3–5 hours are sufficient to comfortably explore the church ruins and the path, and then swim in the cove. It is possible to depart from Fethiye or Ölüdeniz and return in the afternoon. If you are spending more than one day in the region, you can create a full itinerary by combining it with Kayaköy and Ölüdeniz.

Departing from Fethiye or Ölüdeniz and first visiting Gemile Island, then on the way back exploring Ölüdeniz Beach and Kayaköy, forms one of the most efficient daily routes in the region. After visiting the church ruins and swimming on the island, visiting the abandoned Greek village of Kayaköy is a logical sequence for a historical day. You can leave Ölüdeniz for the end of the day and spend time on the beach at sunset.

Since the paths on the island are uneven and rocky, prefer sports shoes instead of slippers or sandals. Shade is limited; bring sunscreen and a hat. Since there are no sales points on the island, it is important to bring enough drinking water. Booking a boat tour in advance makes it easier to find a spot, especially in summer. Since the island is a historical site, avoid damaging the ruins.
