Sedir Island Ancient City (Kedrai Ancient City)

Sedir Island, anciently known as Kedrai, is located within the borders of the Ula district of Mula province, to the east of Gkova Bay. The island, which has protected status, is managed as an archaeological site affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The beach stretching along approximately 800 meters of coastline and the largely well-preserved archaeological remains make the island one of the most interesting day trip destinations in the Aegean.

To enjoy the island most pleasantly, April-June and September-October are the best months. During these periods, the weather is suitable for sea travel and walking, and boat crowds are much smaller compared to mid-summer. In July and August, the number of boats docking at Cleopatra Beach significantly increases; the first trips departing from 08:30 in the morning are calmer. Finding regular trips to the island can become difficult in winter months.

The fastest access to the island is provided from Çamlı Village port. Akyaka Neighborhood, part of Mula's Ula district, is another departure point. Daily tour boats from Marmaris also stop at Sedir Island. Direct access to the island by road is not possible; a boat is mandatory. You can reach Çamlı Village by private car or dolmuş (shared taxi) via Mula or Marmaris.

After arriving on the island, your first stop could be Cleopatra Beach; with its fine white sand and crystal clear water, this is the island's most well-known spot. From the beach, a walk of approximately 10-15 minutes will take you to the ruins of the Ancient City of Kedrai and the ancient amphitheater. Visitors note that the theater is not on the scale of Aspendos, but sitting among the ancient stones and watching the sea offers a unique sense of peace. Short nature walks can also be taken in the inner parts of the island among olive trees and small shrubs. Boncuk Bay is a good alternative for those looking for a quiet cooling-off spot away from the crowds.

The turquoise water and white sand of Cleopatra Beach offer a perfect backdrop for photography, especially in the morning hours when the sun angle is low. The view of the bay from the ancient theater is also a frequently preferred shot. During a boat tour around the island, it is also possible to frame the entire coastline.

Sedir Island is typically a day trip destination. 3-4 hours are sufficient to visit the ancient ruins, swim at Cleopatra Beach, and take a short walk on the island. For those who wish to extend their swimming and relaxation, half a day can easily be filled. Since there are no accommodation facilities on the island, it needs to be planned as a day trip.

Since the island is a protected area, it is necessary not to damage the ruins or attempt to collect stones or any other material. Shaded areas are quite limited; sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water should be with you. Food and beverage sales on the island may be restricted, so it is recommended to bring snacks. Pay attention to boat times; if you miss the last trip, you might get stranded on the island.

Accommodation is not available on Sedir Island. The nearest accommodation options are in Akyaka and Marmaris. Akyaka is a preferred base due to its proximity to the island and calm atmosphere; Marmaris offers a wider range of hotels. It is easy to catch the first boats from both centers.
