Ancient City of Herakleia

The ideal time to visit Herakleia is during April–May and September–October. During these periods, the temperature is suitable for walking, and Lake Bafa displays its most beautiful colors. Walking in the rocky area during midday in July–August becomes quite difficult; if you come in summer, prefer early mornings or late afternoons. Visitors at sunset hours have the opportunity to see the interplay of light on the lake and the silhouettes of the ruins together.

The Ancient City of Herakleia is located in Kapıkırı Village, Milas district, Muğla province. If you are coming from Bodrum or Muğla city center, follow the Bodrum-Söke highway; after turning off at the Kapıkırı sign, an approximately 9 km village road will lead you to the ancient city. This road is narrow and bumpy, so high-clearance vehicles or SUVs offer a more comfortable ride. Minibus services from Söke or Milas are occasionally organized; it is necessary to confirm current schedules at the local bus station. There is a lakeside parking lot at the entrance to the village; from here, you can use the path leading up to the monastery area.

Herakleia offers multiple perspectives for photography enthusiasts. Along the path leading from the lakeside parking lot to the monastery area, both the ruins and the entirety of Lake Bafa come into frame. Shots taken at sunset in front of the Temple of Athena, combined with reflections on the lake surface, yield impressive results. The rock tombs along the lake shore may not catch the eye at first glance; when examined closely, they reveal rich details in terms of texture and light play. The steep cliffs of the Latmos Mountains form a natural backdrop for wide-angle shots.

Upon entering the village, leave your car in the parking lot and first head towards the rock tombs along the lake shore; these structures can easily be overlooked with a casual glance. Then, pass through the village to reach the Temple of Athena; the view overlooking Lake Bafa from right in front of the temple is one of the most powerful moments of the route. Continue from here, walking along the city walls; the massive blocks from the Hellenistic period are quite impressive. To see the amphitheater and bath ruins located in the back part of the village, you need to walk a bit further; the path is not very smooth, sturdy shoes are essential. Finally, climb up to the monastery area for a panoramic view from above.

There are a few small village restaurants and tea gardens in Kapıkırı Village. Menus are generally based on local home-cooked meals; fresh fish and olive oil dishes stand out. Options are limited, so if you plan a long visit, it's a good idea to bring snacks and plenty of water. Wider restaurant options are available in Milas or Söke.

The ancient city ruins are in an open area and largely unprotected; some visitors express their discomfort with the neglect of the area and environmental cleanliness. Stray animals may be present in the parking area. The path to the amphitheater and baths is uneven; it can be difficult to walk with flat-soled shoes. You may encounter people offering guiding services in the village; be careful not to accept services without prior agreement. Cell phone reception can sometimes be weak, downloading an offline map beforehand might be useful.

2 hours might be sufficient for those who only want to see the main ruins. Those who want to explore the lake shore, rock tombs, city walls, amphitheater, and monastery area together should plan for half a day. A full day can be allocated for those who also want to explore the surroundings of Lake Bafa; there are also places to visit on the other side of the lake.
