Telmessos Ancient City

The best times to visit Telmessos are April–May and September–October. Climbing the stairs in mid-summer can be quite challenging due to the hot and humid weather; visitors specifically warn about this. If you come in the summer months, prefer 1-2 hours before sunset: both the temperature drops and the light conditions become ideal for photography. For those who want to avoid crowds, arriving at 08:30 when it opens is also a good option.

Telmessos Ancient City is approximately 2 kilometers from Fethiye city center. You can easily reach it by minibuses and dolmuşes departing from the central station. For those traveling by car, there is a small, free parking lot near the entrance. It is also possible to walk from the center; the distance is slightly over 1 kilometer, and the path is largely flat. As you approach the area, you can already see the rock tombs, so finding your way is not difficult.

Telmessos stands out as one of Fethiye's best photography spots. The facade of the Amyntas Tomb offers impressive shots, especially in the golden hour light. From the terrace reached after climbing the stairs, Fethiye bay, the marina, and the entire city can be seen in a single frame. When viewed from below, from different points of the city, the rock-cut tombs also create a dramatic appearance. The play of light created by orange tones on the rocks at sunset hours is also particularly interesting.

1 to 2 hours is sufficient to comfortably explore Telmessos. This time allows for examining the Lycian rock tombs, especially the Amyntas Tomb, enjoying the view, and taking photos. Those who also want to see the ancient theater and agora ruins can allocate a little more time. The area is not large; but the impression it leaves, according to the vast majority of visitors, is disproportionate to the time spent.

Dining options immediately around Telmessos are limited. Since it is 2 kilometers from Fethiye city center, you can opt for the fish restaurants and market area in the center before or after your visit. Fethiye's old bazaar and the restaurants along the coast offer a good opportunity to experience the region's seafood cuisine.

Only cash is accepted at the ticket office; card or mobile payment may not be available. If you have a MuseumPass, you can enter directly. Since climbing the stairs can be physically demanding, choose comfortable and non-slip shoes. Bring water with you in the summer months. It is not possible to reach the upper parts with a wheelchair or stroller. Since part of the area can be seen from the outside, you might want to take a look from below before buying a ticket.

Telmessos is the oldest known settlement of Fethiye, a district of Muğla province. An important city of the Lycian civilization, Telmessos was one of the most powerful cities in the region in the 4th century BC. The ancient city had two harbors: one for merchant ships and the other for warships. Today, the main surviving structures include rock tombs, and the remains of a theater and agora. The Tomb of Amyntas is the most monumental of these structures, with its facade reflecting Ionian temple architecture; thanks to the Greek inscription on its portico, its owner is also known. The fact that the tomb is positioned to be visible from almost every point in Fethiye reflects the importance the Lycian period placed on urban planning and the afterlife.
