Caretta Carettas – Iztuzu Beach

The nesting season for Caretta carettas lasts from early May to late October. Female turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs. Hatchlings emerge from mid-August to late September and make their way to the sea; this period is the most active for observation. Between November and April, the beach can be seen in its natural state, but turtle observation is not possible during this time.

As Iztuzu Beach is part of the Köyceğiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area, strict visitor rules apply. During the breeding season, certain sections of the beach and night hours are completely closed to visitors. Approaching nesting areas, driving vehicles on the sand, and using flash photography are prohibited. Avoiding white light sources is critically important; turtles are attracted to light and can become disoriented. The use of sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach is also restricted to specific areas. Administrative fines may be imposed on those who do not comply with the rules.

The most common way to reach Iztuzu Beach is by boats departing from Dalyan center. Boats departing at regular intervals from Dalyan pier reach the beach in approximately 20-30 minutes. Those wishing to come by road can follow the Iztuzu road from Ortaca; vehicle parking is quite limited on this route. The nearest airport is Dalaman Airport; transfers to Ortaca or Dalyan can be arranged from here.

For a day trip centered in Dalyan, you can take a boat to Iztuzu Beach, and in the afternoon, take a boat tour through the Dalyan canals to see the King's Tombs and Köyceğiz Lake. The Dalyan mud baths are also an interesting stop that can be added to this route. Those wishing to participate in hatchling observation activities should also consider the evening hours.

Iztuzu Beach offers a strong natural frame with the Dalyan canals and reeds in the background. From the far end of the beach on the Dalyan side, both the sandy beach and canal views can be photographed together. It is possible to capture images of turtles swimming in the sea during daylight hours. Night photography is prohibited due to conservation rules; absolutely do not use flash in nesting areas.

There are a few small cafes and buffets at the land entrance of Iztuzu Beach. The main food and drink options are concentrated in Dalyan center. Dalyan has many restaurants offering Turkish cuisine as well as fresh fish and seafood. If you are planning a long day, I recommend bringing water and snacks with you.

One full day is sufficient for Iztuzu Beach and Caretta caretta observation alone. For those who want to include activities offered by Dalyan such as the King's Tombs, Köyceğiz Lake, mud baths, and rafting, staying in the region for 2-3 nights provides a much more productive experience. If you are visiting during the hatchling season, also consider the evening hours.
