Sultaniye Thermal Springs and Mud Baths

The most suitable period to visit Sultaniye Thermal Springs is between April and October. In mid-summer (July-August), boat tours are busy and the area can be crowded. Going in the morning offers a calmer experience and helps you avoid the afternoon heat. Although the thermal water temperature is maintained in winter, boat services may be limited; confirm with your tour operator before going.

The most practical way to get there is by boat tours departing from Dalyan center. These tours start in the morning and usually combine the Ancient City of Kaunos, Sultaniye Thermal Springs, and Iztuzu Turtle Beach in a single itinerary. You can easily find a tour boat from Dalyan pier. Those who want to come by road can proceed from Köyceğiz town center towards Sultaniye village; however, since the road is narrow and signage is limited, a boat tour is a much easier alternative.

Food and drinks are sold within the thermal spring area; however, multiple visitor comments state that prices are significantly above market rates. Bringing your own water and light snacks will be both practical and economical. Dalyan center offers many more options for lunch; you can finish your boat tour in the afternoon and eat in town.

The mud bath experience itself offers a good photo opportunity; shots taken after covering your body with mud are among the most shared images of this route. When you exit the area and turn left, there is an area where you can see small water turtles; visitors particularly recommend this spot. Photographs taken from the boat along the Dalyan Canal best reflect the reed and natural texture of the region.

Sulfuric water emits a very strong odor; this can be uncomfortable for some visitors. There are comments about insufficient information signs, so learning the process beforehand from your tour guide or staff will make things easier. There are complaints that an entrance fee is charged even if not everyone in your group wants to enter the thermal spring; it is useful to clarify this issue beforehand. Choose an old swimsuit or swimwear; mud sticks to fabric and may not come off.

Boat tours departing from Dalyan offer the most logical framework for exploring this region. The tour, starting with the Ancient City of Kaunos in the morning, stops at Sultaniye Thermal Springs before noon; in the afternoon, a few hours are spent at Iztuzu Turtle Beach. Watching the reeds on both sides of the canal and water birds like flamingos while returning to Dalyan center in the evening is another pleasure of this route. Plan for approximately 8-9 hours for a full day program.

Sultaniye Thermal Springs is fed by thermal springs surfacing around Çandır and Sultaniye villages, part of Köyceğiz district in Muğla. Located on the opposite bank of the Dalyan Canal, the area attracts both local and foreign tourists. The experience consists of three stages: covering the body in the mud pool, cleaning with a shower or hose, and relaxing in the sulfuric thermal pool.
