Kanlı Divane Archaeological Site (Kanytellis)

Kanlı Divane, also known as Kanytellis, is an ancient city established a few kilometers inland from the Mediterranean coast, west of Mersin. It is believed to have taken its name from the natural reddish tone of its soil. This area, which has seen continuous settlement since the 3rd century BC, contains an ancient street, cisterns, rock-cut tombs, a temple, a basilica, and remains of an olive oil production facility. Its location, dominating sea trade, also reveals the strategic importance of the city in ancient times.

The most suitable periods to visit Kanlı Divane are March–May and September–November. In summer, Mersin's temperature rises considerably; the area largely consists of open terrain, so shade is limited. Visitors particularly recommend choosing before noon or after 17:00 during the summer. When the gates open at 08:00 in the morning, you can find a cooler and quieter visiting opportunity in terms of visitor numbers.

Kanlı Divane is located approximately 3 km north of the Mersin-Silifke highway, within the borders of Ayaş Town, part of the Erdemli district. The most practical way to reach the archaeological site, which is about 50 km from Mersin city center, is by car; signs will guide you along the way. Since car parking is available, there are no issues in this regard. For those coming by public transport, a bus or minibus to Erdemli, and then a taxi option can be considered.

The most striking photo spot in the area is the edge of the sinkhole; its depth offers a captivating perspective. The church and basilica ruins, built with reddish stones, create dramatic shots, especially in the morning and evening light. The reliefs on the inner walls of the sinkhole contain interesting details for close-up shots. Wide-angle photos taken among the olive trees are also a good choice to reflect the unique atmosphere of the area.

The area is quite large and spread over hilly terrain. Walking around in flip-flops or flat-soled shoes can be tiring; prefer sports or outdoor shoes. Entry is only possible with a MüzeKart; you can also use the digital MüzeKart option via e-Devlet. When visiting with small children, it is possible to drive a certain distance within the area; strollers also work, but the ground can be uneven at some points. Be sure to bring enough water with you.

1 to 2 hours is sufficient to explore Kanlı Divane at a comfortable pace. The vast majority of visitors state that they toured the entire area in about 1 hour; for those who want to examine the reliefs and olive oil workshop remains in more detail, 2 hours would be a more appropriate plan. When combined with other cultural points in Erdemli, it is easily possible to create a half-day excursion route.

There are no food and beverage facilities within the archaeological site; therefore, it is important to bring snacks and water with you. There are local restaurants and cafes in the Erdemli district center. Fresh fish, mezes, and olive oil dishes of Mediterranean cuisine are also prominent in this region; Erdemli center is a good option in this regard.

If you are departing from Mersin, you can visit Kanlı Divane at 08:00 and then explore the Erdemli coastline or other ancient sites in the vicinity in the afternoon. If you are coming from Silifke, it is possible to see the history of the region in a layered way by combining it with the Cennet-Cehennem Sinkholes or Adamkayalar reliefs along the route. It is recommended to allocate a full day for such a route.
