According to the historian Strabo, part of the city was on land, and part was on the island opposite; this structure also explains why the sea castle, known today as Kızkalesi, was built in that exact location. Many structural remains have survived in the city, including a theater, agora, basilica, necropolis, aqueducts, and cisterns. Traces of the Roman-era water supply system, consisting of rock-cut channels and tunnels that carried water from the Lamas (Limonlu) Stream to the city, can be seen in the valley. In the necropolis area, stone sarcophagi lined along the ancient road and monumental tombs with Latin inscriptions attract attention; an inscription on one sarcophagus even recorded the fine to be paid if an unauthorized burial occurred in the tomb. Best Time to Visit
April, May, September, and October are the most suitable periods for Korykos. During these months, the weather is pleasant for walking outdoors, and tourist density is relatively low. In July-August, the Mediterranean sun is very harsh, especially in the afternoon; if you come during this season, prefer the morning hours and bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
In winter, the region becomes deserted; some facilities and nearby accommodation options may be closed. Nevertheless, those who come in winter have the chance to explore the ruins in a much calmer atmosphere.
How to Get There
Korykos Ancient City is located in Kızkalesi Neighborhood, approximately 65 km from Mersin and 20 km from Silifke, on the D400 Mersin-Silifke highway. There are roadside parking facilities for those arriving by private car.
Those wishing to come by public transport can use dolmuşes or minibuses departing from Mersin or Silifke bus terminals to Kızkalesi. Vehicles departing from Silifke run more frequently. After getting off in Kızkalesi Neighborhood, the ancient city is within walking distance.

Korykos, together with Kanlıdivane Ancient City, forms a pair that can be visited in a single day. The distance between the two cities is a few kilometers; there is also a historical connection between them: both developed in the Cilicia region during the Roman period and withdrew from the stage of history together in the 7th century.
Starting your day with Kanlıdivane and continuing to Korykos will allow you to grasp the historical fabric of the region more comprehensively. You can complete the day by visiting Kızkalesi's sea castle and land castle. This route covering three points takes approximately half a day to a full day.
What to Eat Nearby
Kızkalesi Neighborhood hosts numerous fish restaurants and pide-kebab eateries open during the summer season. Fresh Mediterranean seafood is the most distinctive flavor of the region; you can also find soup, gözleme (Turkish flatbread), and home-cooked meals at small businesses along the coast.
There are no food or beverage sales within or immediately next to the ancient city; if you plan a long visit, it is recommended to bring water and light snacks with you.
