Elaiussa Sebaste is a Roman port city located on the coast in Erdemli district of Mersin, which existed from the 2nd Century BC to the 7th Century AD; it is one of the most comprehensive ancient cities in the Cilicia region with its theater, agora, basilica, and necropolis ruins.
Elaiussa Sebaste is a Roman port city built intertwined with the sea, located on the coastal road connecting Anatolia to Syria. According to the historian Strabo, the city was situated partly on land and partly on the island opposite; it emerged from the merger of two settlements named Elaiussa and Sebaste. Thanks to olive oil production and maritime trade, this settlement was one of the most vibrant cities in the region for centuries, before fading into history in the early 7th Century AD.
The site features a theater, an agora, a well-preserved five-nave basilica, the Temple of Jupiter, bath structures, aqueducts, and a necropolis. The fish mosaics in the pools within the agora and the sea view opening from the cavea of the theater are among the prominent experiences for visitors. The stone sarcophagi lined along an ancient road in the necropolis area and their inscriptions are also noteworthy; one sarcophagus bears an inscription stating that the tomb would only be used for a specific person and imposing a heavy fine in case of violation. The remains of the ancient water transmission system, created with rock-carved channels and aqueducts in the Lamas Valley, add a distinct depth to the city. Some visitors note that the area is not sufficiently preserved and is in need of maintenance; reading about the history of the ancient city before visiting will allow you to have a true discovery experience instead of just seeing ruins.

Guide's Note
What is Elaiussa Sebaste?
Elaiussa Sebaste is a Roman port city founded in the late 2nd century BC and continuously inhabited until the 7th century AD. Thanks to its strategic location on the coastal road connecting Anatolia to Syria and its rich agricultural resources, especially olive oil, it became the region's trade and production center for centuries. The historian Strabo states that part of the city was on land and part on the island opposite. Today, the area, located within the borders of Ayaş Neighborhood in Erdemli district of Mersin, remains one of the most comprehensive ancient cities in the Cilicia region.
When to Visit?
The best time to visit Elaiussa Sebaste is during April–May and September–October. In spring, the vegetation is green, the weather is cool, and the area is calm. In autumn, the summer crowds have dispersed, and temperatures have dropped to a much more favorable level for walking. In July–August, the Mediterranean sun can be quite oppressive in this shadeless area; it is advisable to visit between 08:00–10:00 during this period. In winter, the area remains deserted, and access to some structures may become difficult.
How to Get There?
From Mersin city center, you can reach Ayaş Town by public bus number 170 or by minibus lines known as Silifke Koop. Those coming by private car should follow the Mersin–Silifke (D400) highway to Erdemli, then turn towards Ayaş; the ancient city is located very close to the main road and is signposted. It is also easily accessible from Silifke via the same highway.
Photo Spots
The perspective opening to the sea from the cavea of the theater is one of the most impressive photo spots in the area; especially in the afternoon, the light angle enhances this shot. The fish mosaics in the pools within the agora offer an interesting detail for close-up shots. The stone sarcophagi lined along the necropolis road and their reliefs are also ideal for documentary-style frames. The ruins of the Byzantine palace and the aqueducts can be considered suitable structures for wide-angle photography.
What to Eat Nearby?
Dining options are quite limited in the immediate vicinity of the ancient city. There are various restaurants and cafes in Erdemli town center. The region is known for its citrus fruits and fresh seafood; fish restaurants in Erdemli can be a good choice for fresh sea bass and sea bream. If you are planning a long visit, it is recommended to bring water and light snacks with you.
Things to Consider
Visitor comments indicate that the ancient city is sometimes closed; therefore, it would be advisable to call the Mersin Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before going to confirm whether the site is open for visits. The area is large and shadeless; visiting without sufficient water, sunscreen, and appropriate footwear can be tiring. Visitors also state that a separate entrance fee is applied to the beach near the ancient city; this fee is independent of the ancient city entrance. Since some of the ruins are quite scattered and unmaintained, families with children should tread carefully.
Regional Route Suggestion
Elaiussa Sebaste is an important stop on the ancient city route of the Cilicia region. Nearby are the ancient city of Korykos and Kız Kalesi (Maiden's Castle) and Erkek Kalesi (Man's Castle), the ancient city of Olba (Uzuncaburç), and the Heaven-Hell sinkholes. Starting from Mersin, visiting Elaiussa Sebaste first, then Kız Kalesi, and Olba in the afternoon forms a daily route. The Silifke Museum is also a good complement for those who want to see the region's archaeological heritage together.
