Emirzeli (İmirzeli) Ancient City

The most suitable periods to visit Emirzeli are April–May and September–October. In spring, the vegetation is green, and temperatures are ideal for walking. In mid-summer, since the area is at an altitude of 590 meters, it remains cooler than the city center; however, the sun can be quite scorching at midday. In winter, village roads may be muddy and difficult to access; it is necessary to check road conditions in advance during this period.

From Mersin city center, proceed approximately 50 km on the D-400 highway towards Erdemli, then reach Karaahmetli Village. A private car is by far the most practical option for this route. There are no regular public transport services from Erdemli to the village; those wishing to inquire about dolmuş (shared taxi) options can get up-to-date information from the Erdemli bus station. Emirzeli is very suitable for creating a nice day trip by combining it with other ancient cities around Erdemli. The Kanlıdivane ancient site is located southeast of Emirzeli, and both areas can be easily visited on the same day. For a broader program, other historical points in Erdemli can also be added to the route. Using a map application during transitions between areas will prevent you from getting lost on village roads.

1–2 hours is sufficient for the Emirzeli ancient site itself. When combined with Kanlıdivane or other ancient sites in the vicinity, it is more logical to plan a full day. Considering the uneven terrain of the area, I recommend proceeding at a careful pace without rushing.

The remains of the tower from the Hellenistic period are one of the most impressive photographic subjects of the area; strong shots can be obtained with the surrounding natural landscape. The stone masonry of the Roman-era residential walls and the Byzantine church offer rich material for close-up detail photography. Photos taken in the morning hours when the light is soft generally yield more successful results.

The area has a more natural and unkempt appearance compared to large, regularly maintained ancient sites. Since the ground is stony and uneven, sturdy hiking shoes are mandatory. There are no facilities, cafes, or sales points in the immediate vicinity; you need to bring water and food with you. I recommend getting up-to-date information on visiting hours and possible entrance fees from the official channels of the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality or the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

There are no food and drink options immediately near the Emirzeli ancient site. When you return to Erdemli town center, you can try the flavors of Mersin cuisine at local restaurants, especially fresh seafood and regional kebab varieties. If you plan a long day, bringing ready-made sandwiches and plenty of water will be the most practical solution.

The closest accommodation options to Emirzeli are located in the Erdemli district center. For a wider range of hotels, you can choose Mersin city center; it is possible to reach the ancient site from here on a day trip. During the summer season, holiday villages and guesthouses along the Erdemli coastline can also be considered as alternatives.
