Eski Cami

Thanks to Mersin's Mediterranean climate, Eski Cami can be visited for most of the year. In summer, temperatures can be stifling during midday, so choosing late morning or late afternoon hours offers a more comfortable visit. Spring and autumn stand out as the most enjoyable periods, combining mild weather with the lively atmosphere of the bazaar area.

During Friday prayers and other daily prayers, the mosque's interior is heavily used for worship. Planning your visit outside these hours will make it easier to examine the structure in a calmer environment.

Eski Cami is located on Cami Şerif Street, within the historic bazaar area of Mersin's Akdeniz district. It is possible to reach it by public buses and minibuses going to the Akdeniz district from Mersin city center. You can easily reach the mosque on foot by getting off at Mersin City Hospital or Uray Street stops.

If you are coming by car, it is recommended to use paid parking lots in the vicinity due to the narrow streets in the bazaar area. For those who want to visit other historical sites in Mersin, Yumuktepe Mound and Mersin Marina can be included in this route.

Eski Cami was built in 1870 in the name of Bezm-i Alem Valide Sultan, the mother of Sultan Abdülmecit. This mosque, among many charitable works bearing the Valide Sultan's name, is one of Mersin's most important religious structures from the Ottoman period.

The structure sits on a rectangular plan. With its wooden cradle roof and single minaret, it carries the characteristic features of the region's 19th-century mosque architecture. The existence of an Ottoman structure of this scale that has preserved its originality within the historical fabric, much of which has been renewed during Mersin's rapid urbanization process, gives the mosque a distinct historical value.

The best external photograph of the mosque is taken from the opposite side of Cami Şerif Street; from this angle, both the minaret and the wooden roof can be captured in the same frame. The contrast created by the historic bazaar texture around the mosque also offers interesting shots.

For those who wish to take photos inside, hours outside of prayer times are more suitable. The wooden ceiling craftsmanship and simple interior details make for excellent subjects for close-up shots. When taking photos, remember to show respect to worshippers and ask for permission if necessary.

The historic bazaar area where Eski Cami is located is also a convenient spot to taste Mersin's local delicacies. The duo of Mersin's unique tantuni and şalgam should definitely be tried at nearby restaurants. Tantuni is a street food that has become a symbol of Mersin, prepared by cooking thinly sliced meat and spices on a griddle.

Small patisseries and coffee houses within the bazaar can be preferred for a break in the afternoon. Restaurants offering Mersin's fresh seafood are concentrated in the Marina area; going there after visiting the mosque completes a beautiful day.

Since Eski Cami is located in the heart of Mersin's historic bazaar area, you can use it as a starting point for a walking route. After the mosque, you can walk along Uray Street to explore the old bazaar texture, and then head towards Mersin Marina.

For a more comprehensive day plan, you can also add Yumuktepe Mound to your itinerary; one of Turkey's oldest settlement areas, the mound is a few kilometers away from Eski Cami. If you are considering a day trip to Tarsus, the Eski Cami and Cleopatra's Gate there can also be seen on the same day.

Eski Cami is an actively used place of worship. During your visit, it is important to avoid speaking loudly, to refrain from entering during prayer times, and to come dressed appropriately out of respect. Female visitors are expected to cover their heads and keep their shoulders and knees covered; for men, choosing long trousers instead of shorts would be appropriate.

Due to the mosque's location on a narrow street, it may be difficult to approach with large vehicles. Combining your visit with a bazaar tour and coming on foot is both practical and enjoyable.
