Refah Martyrs' Monument

During the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, the Ottoman Empire sent the Ertuğrul Frigate to Japan in 1890 to strengthen diplomatic relations with Japan. On its return journey, the ship was caught in a violent storm off the Japanese coast and sank. Shortly after this great loss, the Refah ship was also torpedoed near Cape Karpat; 167 people lost their lives. This monument in Mersin was built to keep alive the memory of those who were martyred in that disaster.

The Refah Martyrs' Monument, a sister structure to the monument erected for the Ertuğrul martyrs in Kushimoto, Japan, symbolizes one of the historical foundations of Turkish-Japanese friendship.
