Cambazlı Church

Silifke and its surroundings can be quite hot and humid in summer. Since Cambazlı Church is an open-air archaeological site, the periods of April-June and September-November are much more comfortable for visiting. The weather is mild during these months, and you can easily visit the surrounding ancient sites on the same day. In summer, shaded areas are extremely limited, so it's a good idea to prefer between 08:00-10:00 or after 17:00.

Cambazlı Church is located approximately 29 kilometers east of Silifke district center. Two different routes can be used to reach the church: roads passing through Limonlu Neighborhood or Hüseyinler Village. Since both routes pass through village roads, using a private car makes the visit much easier. If you are departing from Silifke, you should expect a journey of approximately 45-60 minutes. While it is possible to reach the village center by public transport, a vehicle is required for the final distance.

1-2 hours are sufficient for Cambazlı Church alone. Since the structure is located on the ancient route between Uzuncaburç (Diocaesarea) and Kız Kalesi, when combined with these two points, a full day can easily be filled. If you also add the castle and museum in Silifke center to your itinerary, it would be logical to plan at least one overnight stay in the region.

Starting from Silifke center, first visit Silifke Castle and Silifke Museum, then proceed to Uzuncaburç (Diocaesarea). After Uzuncaburç, head towards Cambazlı Village to visit the church. On your return route, you can stop by Kız Kalesi. This route allows you to follow the history of the region, from the Hellenistic to the Byzantine period, in a chronological manner.

The three-nave interior of the church and its standing stone walls offer strong photographic opportunities, especially in the morning light. Wide-angle shots taken from the eastern facade of the structure capture the basilica and the surrounding nature together. The Roman and Hellenistic ruins in the vicinity also provide additional elements that can be included in the frame.

Since Cambazlı Church is an open-air archaeological site, there are no facilities such as toilets or cafeterias; it is recommended to bring sufficient water and snacks with you. The ground is uneven and stony, so comfortable, sturdy-soled shoes are essential. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) should not be neglected in summer. Signal may be weak in the area; downloading the route in advance and saving it as an offline map will make your job easier.

Dining options in Cambazlı Village are extremely limited. It is advisable to eat in Silifke center before your visit or bring your own food. Silifke is a district known for its local yogurt and tahini molasses; it is possible to find home-cooked meals in small restaurants in the bazaar.
