Sunullah Gaybi Tomb

Kalburcuzâde Sun'ullah Gaybî el-Kütahyevî, full name Sun'ullah b. Ahmed b. Beşir, was a Sufi poet born in Kütahya. His birth year is not clear in sources: some oral and written sources give 1615, while others state 1624 or 1629. His affiliation with the Bayramî-Melâmî tradition is cited as the reason why his name is not frequently mentioned in classical biographical dictionaries; Hüseyin Vassâf attributes this to Gaybî's tendency to conceal himself. Gaybi Divanı, Sohbetname, Biadname, Ruh'ül-Akaidname, Makasıd-ı Ayniye and Hüda Rabbim are among his main works. In his poems, he dealt with fundamental issues of Sufism such as manifestation, the theory of cycles, and the perfect human, writing in both aruz and syllabic meters.

Since the tomb is outdoors within the cemetery grounds, it's wise to avoid the midday heat of summer. Spring and autumn are more comfortable for both weather conditions and a peaceful visit. Adding it to an itinerary with Kütahya's tile museums and other historical structures would be more efficient than visiting it alone.

The tomb is located approximately 1 kilometer from Kütahya city center, immediately behind the old bus station, within Musalla Cemetery. It is possible to reach it by walking from the center in 15-20 minutes. For those going by car, there are parking facilities around the cemetery. It can also be reached by taking one of the city minibus lines to Gaybiefendi Mahallesi and then a short walk to the tomb.

Gaybiefendi Mahallesi is one of Kütahya's central neighborhoods. The tomb is located within Musalla Cemetery, in the area that gives the neighborhood its name. Thanks to its proximity to points such as Kütahya Castle, Ulu Mosque, and Kütahya Museum in Kütahya city center, it can easily be added to a route while exploring the city center.

The tomb itself is a small structure; it can be comfortably visited within 15-20 minutes. Those who wish to read its inscription or examine its architecture may allocate a little more time. If you are spending a day in Kütahya, it is possible to fit the tomb into the same day with other historical sites.

For a one-day itinerary in Kütahya city center, planning the Sunullah Gaybi Tomb for the morning hours, while the cemetery is still quiet, is a good choice. Afterwards, you can proceed to Kütahya Castle and the historical streets around it, and from there to tile workshops and museums. Since the tomb is not a crowded tourist attraction, it can be considered a calm, short break on your route.

Since the tomb is located within a cemetery, it is important to behave quietly and respectfully. The structure does not have extensive tourist infrastructure; there may not be information boards or guides, so reading a little about Gaybî's life beforehand will make the visit more meaningful. Access with wheelchairs or strollers may be difficult as the cemetery ground can be uneven.
