Emet Cevizdere Martyrs' Memorial

Emet was occupied by the Greeks on August 14, 1921, and their headquarters were established in the government building. The Kuva-yi Milliye members from Emet tried to capture these headquarters with a night raid. The Greek unit in Tavşanlı learned of the situation and dispatched a battalion of soldiers. A group of 80-100 people from the public set up an ambush on the slopes on both sides of the Cevizderesi Gorge. When the villagers of Günlüce also cut off the retreat route, the Greek battalion was caught between two fires. The raid took place on September 3, 1922, and only 20-25 people from the battalion survived.

The Martyrs' Memorial is located on the Tavşanlı-Emet highway, within the borders of Günlüce Village. It is possible to reach Emet from Kütahya city center by district buses. From there, using your own vehicle or asking about local minibus services is the most practical way to reach the village and the monument. Searching directly for 'Günlüce Village' on navigation makes it easier to find the exact location of the memorial.

Since the Martyrs' Memorial is open every day of the year, there are no seasonal restrictions. However, spring and autumn months, when the summer heat has subsided, are more comfortable for walking around the slopes in the gorge. The commemoration ceremony held on September 3rd is a special date when the historical event is vividly remembered. If you plan to go to the area on that day, it would be good to confirm the time of the ceremony from local sources.

Visiting the monument area and its surroundings takes 30-45 minutes. Those who want to see the topography of the Cevizderesi Gorge and read about its history may allocate a little more time. If you plan it together with other historical sites in Emet district center, half a day is sufficient.

There are other monuments and martyrs' memorials related to the Turkish War of Independence in Emet district center. It is possible to take a short break when passing through Tavşanlı on the way back to Kütahya. A historical route can be created by adding the Çini Museum and Kütahya Castle in Kütahya city center to the same itinerary.

The Martyrs' Memorial is located in a rural area, within the village borders. Do not expect services such as cafes or markets nearby. Water and, if necessary, food should be obtained from Emet district center. If you are going to walk around the slopes of the gorge, it is useful to choose comfortable shoes.

The open area in front of the monument and the gorge view behind it are suitable for simple shots reflecting the historical texture. The light is softer in the morning hours. In the midday heat, the slopes of the gorge can create harsh shadows.
