Çakırsaz Han is a 13th-14th century Seljuk caravanserai located in the Altıntaş district of Kütahya, built for accommodation on the Kütahya-Afyonkarahisar trade route, notable for its honeycomb-patterned stone portal and three-aisled vaulted interior.
Çakırsaz Han is a Seljuk structure built as an accommodation point on the Kütahya-Afyonkarahisar trade route. These hans formed a network, each a day's walk apart, between Yenice Han in Kütahya and Eğret Han in Anıtkaya, Afyonkarahisar. Çakırsaz is a link in this chain. It continued to be used during the Germiyan Beylik and Ottoman periods, and after being abandoned, it was restored by the General Directorate of Foundations in 2008 and reopened for service.
The building is entered through an iwan-shaped, round-arched door on the east facade. On the tympanum of the door, there is a honeycomb pattern decoration formed by white hexagonal stones and black triangular bricks; almost all of the han's ornamentation is concentrated here. Below the entrance, there is a masonry composed of ashlar stone and three rows of bricks, while the remaining walls are built with rubble stone held together by mortar. Inside, a three-aisled, vaulted plan greets the visitor: the central aisle is wider and higher than the side ones, the arches are brick, and the piers are marble and ashlar stone. There are almost no windows. Light filters through the clerestory windows in the vault.
Today, it stands in a quiet location right next to the village mosque. Since it is outside the major tourist routes, the number of visitors is low, which offers the opportunity to explore the structure alone. It can be seen on the right shortly after passing the turn-off for Altıntaş on the Kütahya-Afyon highway.

Guide's Note
About the Han
Çakırsaz Han is a caravanserai built during the Seljuk period in the 13th-14th centuries. It was established for accommodation and security purposes on the Kütahya-Afyonkarahisar trade route and continued to be used during the Germiyan Beylik and Ottoman periods. The structure is located between Yenice Han in Kütahya and Eğret Han in Afyonkarahisar, as part of the historical route.
Architectural details and photo spots
The portal on the east facade is the most meticulously crafted part of the han. The honeycomb pattern formed by white hexagonal stones and black triangular bricks is visible above the arch springing level. A single piece of stone is used on the north jamb of the door, while two-piece block stones are used on the south. Inside, there are three vaulted aisles, the central one being higher and wider; the arches are brick, and the piers are built with spolia stones. Since there are no windows, the clerestory windows in the vault are the only light source. This creates an interesting play of light and shadow inside, suitable for photography during noon.
How to get there
From Kütahya city center, Altıntaş district is reached by road, and from there, there is a few-kilometer road to Çakırsaz Village. The han is noticeable near the entrance of the village, right next to the mosque. Public transportation options are limited, so it is necessary to go by your own car or by village minibuses departing from Altıntaş.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable periods in terms of both road conditions and temperature. In summer months, the stone structure can get quite hot during noon; in winter months, village roads can sometimes be difficult. Morning hours are preferred for photography due to the angle of the light hitting the portal.
How to add to your itinerary
The han can be visited along with other historical sites in the Altıntaş district. After seeing the Germiyanid and Ottoman period structures in Kütahya city center, making a day trip towards Altıntaş is logical. When visited alone, the visit is short, so combining it with other stops in the region allows for more efficient use of time.
Things to know before you go
The han is located within a small village settlement and does not have extensive visitor infrastructure. Do not expect services such as parking, toilets, or sales points. The nearest major settlement is Altıntaş district center, where basic needs can be met. Comfortable shoes are recommended as the walking surface is stone and uneven.
