Physician Captain Hamdi Bey Monument

August 30, 1922, was one of the most intense days of the Great Offensive. On the 10th kilometer of the Kütahya-Afyonkarahisar road, near the Porsuk Bridge, Physician Captain Hamdi Bey and 158 medical soldiers accompanying him, who were transporting medicine to the Composite Cavalry Division, were ambushed and martyred by the retreating 53rd Greek Regiment. This event is one of the examples showing how dangerous the rear of the front lines could be, even in the final stages of the war.

The monument is located outdoors, on a hilltop area. Visiting in spring or autumn months provides a more comfortable experience, avoiding the midday heat of summer. August 30th is a symbolic day as it marks the anniversary of the monument's opening. It is not possible to get off directly at this point by public transport; you may need to rent a car or take an intercity bus on this route and ask the driver where to get off.

The monument is located on the way when traveling from Kütahya to Gediz or Afyonkarahisar. After visiting attractions in Kütahya city center such as Kütahya Castle and the Tile Museum, it can be considered a short stop when leaving the city. If you are going to Gediz, you will already be using this route, so no extra detour is required.

Since the monument rises on a hill, it appears in silhouette when viewed from the highway. The light angle near sunset might be more suitable for photography. The open terrain around the monument allows for wide-angle shots.
