Kaşalıç Nature Reserve is a beech-black pine forest in Domaniç, Kütahya, resembling the Black Sea forest ecosystem; it is rich in wildlife and offers long-distance hiking routes.
Kaşalıç, in the Domaniç district of Kütahya, is a forest area that does not fit the steppe character of the Inner Aegean. Dominated by beech and black pine, this area geographically exhibits the characteristics of Black Sea forests, despite being surrounded by a steppe ecosystem. Oak, aspen, wild pear, and pear trees also appear occasionally. The understory includes species such as blackberry, nettle, wild strawberry, and crocus.
A 4-kilometer road, branching off from the 5th kilometer of the Domaniç-İnegöl highway, leads you to the area. The region is within the borders of Durabey Village, approximately 7 km from Domaniç town center and 90 km from Kütahya city center. It is also rich in wildlife: bears, wild boars, deer, foxes, rabbits, badgers, and hedgehogs live in these forests. Spotting them is a matter of luck, of course, but the chance of finding tracks is high.
The region is popular for those looking for hiking routes. There are long-distance trails passing through Topuk Plateau and Darıtepe, one of which is 20 km long and considered challenging. It is a preferred spot if you are planning a real forest hike, not a short trip.

Best Time to Visit
Between May and September, the forest is at its most vibrant. The undergrowth, blackberries, wild strawberries, and crocuses are visible during this period. Since the altitude varies between 1,200-1,900 meters, snow closures can occur in winter, making hiking difficult. Autumn, when beech leaves change color, is also preferred for photography.
How to Get There
From Kütahya city center to Domaniç by road is approximately 90 km. The 4 km road branching off from the 5th kilometer of the Domaniç-İnegöl highway leads directly to Durabey Village and the entrance of the protected area. Public transport is not frequent on this route; it is recommended to use a private vehicle or an organized tour. The road is partially narrow, so access with large vehicles might be difficult.
Hiking Routes
One of the registered trails in the region is a 20 km loop route passing through Topuk Plateau-Darıtepe. It has an elevation gain of 677 meters, a maximum altitude of 1,882 meters, and is marked as high difficulty. Shorter alternatives are also available, with routes of 10-12 km passing through the Domaniç forests. If you are embarking on a long route, you need to carry a GPS device or a pre-downloaded route file, as signage is insufficient.
Things to Consider
Large mammals such as bears and wild boars live in the area. It is advisable to walk in groups and during daylight hours rather than alone. Mobile phone network coverage can be weak in forested areas, so it is useful to inform someone of your route beforehand. There are no businesses where you can find water and food, so you need to carry your own supplies.
Prominent Photo Spots
Monumental beech and black pine trees attract attention due to their trunk thickness and age. The dense green texture of the forest, which bears the character of the Black Sea, creates a complete contrast with the surrounding steppe landscape. This transition zone offers an interesting frame for photography. Autumn, with the yellow-orange tones of beech leaves, is also a preferred time.

Kaşalıç is officially known as Domaniç-Kaşalıç Nature Reserve and is one of the two nature reserves in Kütahya (the other being Vakıf Çamlığı in Tavşanlı). Despite being surrounded by the steppe ecosystem of the Inner Aegean Region, the area largely retains the characteristics of the Black Sea forest ecosystem. This feature makes the region interesting from a botanical and ecological perspective.
